Hot 93.3

The more old stuff that this station play makes me feel that something is up. What are they doing playing Third Eye Blind and No Doubt on here?

They still seem to be playing some songs that wouldn't get on a Hot AC station -- but they do seem to be leaning more in that direction.

Looking back at their 30-day playlist, I see they are rhythmic-leaning on their 90s ("My Pony," "Big Poppa," "Mo Money Mo Problems") and 2000s (songs from Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Akon, and the like). There is an occasional rock song from back in the day (Avril Lavigne, Blink 182's "All The Small Things) from what I saw. When Third Eye Blind and No Doubt were mentioned, I figured a rock song like "Black Hole Sun" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" would end up, but nope. I was also expecting something like Matchbox Twenty, Daughtry, or Fall Out Boy to end up there but again, nope.

Perhaps give a go to drop Top-40 for Rhythmic AC (not the classic hip hop it was) if it keeps on this direction... or just drop it all and go WBAP or sell the station.

So 90's and 2000s it is!
I’m actually liking this so far! Not sure how it’ll work out in the long run, but for now, I’m digging it!

Been listening for the past 30 mins or so:

Right Said Fred - I’m Too Sexy
Del Amitri - Roll To Me
Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby
Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy and Mase - Mo Money, Mo Problems
Oasis - Wonderwall
Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song
Miley Cyrus - The Climb

It looks like 90s through today with the emphasis being on the 90s through early 10s but still some currents mixed in. Definitely no longer CHR but not just 90s/00s. Sort of like an uptempo AC.

Pretty similar to WWRM in Tampa (a mainstream AC) in terms of eras being played, although WWRM plays fewer 90s. But, KLIF does play some hip hop. However, I must note that, in typical Jan Jeffries's Cumulus fashion, they played Gavin DeGraw's In Love With a Girl. (They also played Selena's Dreaming of You and Freak Nasty's Da Dip. Interesting choices.)

Will KLIF do well as a gold-leaning, millennial-friendly AC? The jury is still out, but Cumulus seems to desire putting KDMX out of its misery with whatever they have left. KDMX really had a free fall as of late, being 18th in the latest 6+ book. (Although, KDGE is #9 whilst KJKK is #14.)

I don't understand the purpose of keeping currents in the mix. Music mix ought to be 90s to early 2010s and nothing else.

I thought the same thing at first. However, Kiss in Sacramento - the obvious inspiration for this change - does the same thing, sprinkling in the absolute biggest smashes of the last 3-5 years (there aren't many - "As It Was," "Stay," "Blinding Lights," "Heat Waves") a few times a day.

At the end of the day, the premise of this format is "the biggest, most familiar pop hits of the last 30 years" rather than "strictly 90s and 2000s"...in essence, a more sonically aggressive AC format. ACs have (re)currents, and throwing those songs in helps insulate burn on the golds.

As for whether this rendition of the format work? It will only do so much on that signal, but I think this was as good of a move as any.

Also similar to WMIA in Miami.

I do feel they should have dropped the “Hot” name - how many different formats and format variations has that name been through?

Whatever it does, between KDGE, KHKS, and poor KDMX, most of their audience is probably going to be shared with those 3.

KDMX used to be a strong Hot AC. I’m not sure what’s happened. Is it the market? The format’s current state? The station on-air?

I feel like a playlist ranging from roughly 1993-2015 or so could do a solid job at attracting a 25-44 audience. A millenial Classic Hits format would probably be the best way to describe such a station. Probably wouldn't be a huge performer on KLIF-FM due to signal, but could possibly do nicely in a different market on a better signal.

i think i'll call this format "Modern Oldies" as in Oldies from 90s & 2000s, any oldies station playing 80s and older, should be known as "Classic Oldies"
