A 6.4 Quake is reported in the Eureka, CA area

Note here are some of the preliminary reports from the Northern Coast of California.

The coverage points out that every significant quake is different. Depending on where the fault is, the depth and the surrounding terrain, damage can vary from "insignificant" to "considerable". It looks like this one caused pretty severe lateral motion, causing roads to buckle, foundations to crack and even roofs to shake loose from building frames.

This incident caused us to check our emergency food supplies and other quake-related preparations.

Here is the approximate epicenter of the now named Ferndale, California quake.

The December 20, 2022, M 6.4 earthquake occurred approximately 15 km southwest of Ferndale, California near the coast of northern California in the vicinity of the Mendocino triple junction – the region where the Pacific, North America, and Juan de Fuca/Gorda plates meet. Focal mechanism solutions indicate that rupture occurred as a result of strike-slip faulting on a steeply dipping fault striking either southeast or southwest. The location, depth and faulting mechanism indicate that this event likely occurred within the subducting Gorda Plate.

A friend tuned in to KMED/KMCD online and they apparently had 3 people on the air talking about it at that hour. Several of their stations were off the air at that point.

Note this is a preliminary report on the death toll for now.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake that rattled Northern California early Tuesday has resulted in at least two deaths from medical emergencies, causing damage across the region and leaving tens of thousands without power in Humboldt County, according to authorities.

The quake was reported at 2:34 a.m. just offshore about 7½ miles southwest of Ferndale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No tsunami was expected, the Sheriff's Office said on Twitter, but the agency advised residents to prepare for aftershocks.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, two individuals have died as a result of medical emergencies occurring during or just following the earthquake, and at least 11 people have sustained injuries.
