Barbara Walters dies at 93

ABC News is airing a special report across the network as I write this. Airing a number of photos of Barbara with other broadcast icons, from Vin Scully to Katie Couric and David Muir.

The View was a groundbreaking show when it launched in 1997
Also after Barbara Walters left the View on ABC she was listed as Special Contributor for ABC prior to her health issues and death. Note I only know her for the ABC News and Specials part that she's been in for my entire life I never knew she did today until there were old NBC News clips that surfaced.

It was amazing coincidence that I turned on the TV when I did. I won't go into all the details of how it happened but I was setting a TiVo to record something and the TV is always on ABC for some odd reason. I wasn't able to get all of it but there was 30 minutes extra since on the channel the TiVo is on, that much is always recorded. I'll see it later.

But I got back with her all the way to "Today" and Hugh Downs. Is he still alive?

And then they were reunited on "20/20". I quit watching that when there were just too many news magazines. And I watched a number of her interviews but at some point I quit. Maybe I shouldn't have.

This may have been brought up, she also co-anchored the ABC evening news with Harry Reasoner in 1976. The chemistry didn’t work and don’t think it lasted even a year.

Special Sunday night on ABC:

“Our Barbara: A Special Edition of 20/20,” a two-hour primetime special, honors trailblazer and longtime ABC News journalist Barbara Walters, told by her colleagues, those who knew her best and in the iconic newswoman’s own words. The special will feature Walters’ most groundbreaking and iconic interviews, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage of Walters, and interviews with Bob Iger, David Muir, Diane Sawyer, Deborah Roberts, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, among others. ABC News will profile Walters’ prolific life and legacy, including making history as the first woman to co-anchor network morning and evening newscasts and paving the way for women in broadcast journalism. Walters joined ABC News in 1976, where she was the “20/20” co-host and chief correspondent for 25 years and created “The View” as a co-host in 1997. Walters has received national recognition for her influential body of work and has been the recipient of numerous prestigious honors and awards. “Our Barbara: A Special Edition of 20/20” airs Sunday, Jan. 1, at 8 p.m. EST on ABC, next day on Hulu.

Harry was not pleased with sharing the anchor desk. As soon as Roone Arledge took over ABC News, he issued an edict: No two-shot of the pair on the ABC Evening News while he cooked up the World News Tonight concept.

Hugh Downs was born in 1921 and lived until July 2020, according to Wikipedia. He was such a versatile talent displaying professionalism and gravitas, but also a much lighter side. Speaking of "20/20", Hugh Downs started hosting that with Walters in 1978. . She really had quite a career. -- Daryl

I wonder how much of this is currently being put together and how much has been in the can and ready to go for years.

It's probably safe to assume almost all of it has been prepared for some time. Barbara Walters has not appeared regularly on TV in almost a decade, and I recall Whoopi Goldberg announced on the View some months ago that Barbara's health was failing.

That should be go back.

I think you can trust Wikipedia for death dates. They're very strict about posting when people died. I should have just gone there to look.

All the networks have a package for celebrities, I have heard.
