KFI Major Schedule Change Starting Tomorrow

Hearsay is absolutely viable evidence. It is admitted in court all the time. Anyway, what purpose would Michael have to lie about Rush?

I have no idea what Micheal's purpose here is. I have never implied that they are less than honorable.

But he is accusing the most successful talk radio host of all time (who of course is dead and can't defend himself) of not being completely honest with his audience, taking extreme views on air to which he really doesn't subscribe. When pressed for actual facts to support this rather serious charge, he goes with the "my friends told me" bit. When pressured further if there is any corroborating evidence (a good thing to have in court if you are only going with hearsay) we get crickets.

Pretty weak sauce for such a serious charge, if you ask me, especially coming from a newsman who spends a lot of time on this site holding other posters accountable for the accuracy of their posts.

If he would have indicated that these are nothing more than strongly held beliefs on his part, I wouldn't have said anything. I have some strongly held beliefs I can't prove too. But Micheal is using his own unverified but strongly held beliefs to tell another poster, hotpatrick, that he is wrong in his own beliefs (believing Rush means what he says on air). You gotta come with facts if your going to flat out tell another poster they are wrong.

We interrupt Flip's trolling for a basic point.

I did not "go with the my friends told me bit" "when "pressed for actual facts".

I said, right up front, in the first post---responding to Patrick's statement that he would bet his life that Rush believed everything wholeheartedly that he said (screen goes all wavy, harp music plays):

Having worked for many years with a bunch of people who worked with Rush, and having some mutual friends (all told, about 20 people), Rush was, at least until 2010 or so, much more moderate than his on-air persona.

It's possible that he evolved to a more hardline set of beliefs in the final 10 years of his life and career, but as people above noted, in talk radio, every day you need to stir the pot. And it's even more critical when you align yourself with a political movement that doesn't take dissent or contradictory facts well.

That's literally it. Before Flip said anything. And Flip knows it. Friends and co-workers over a period of 30 years don't do point-by-point takedowns, with evidence, of instances where Rush in private and Rush on air differed. They say, and they said, what I said they said....which is not a "serious charge", unless you think being moderate is a serious charge, and to Flip it may well be. It's an observation, again, by people who liked and in some cases loved Rush Limbaugh, the person.

Michael,

I told you earlier you are a great guy and most worthy debate opponent (especially when the facts are not on your side!) and you are absolutely right: you went with the "my friends told me bit" right out of the gate, not when pressured. You stuck to your story all day without deviation even after the pressure came.

To all:

I want to make clear and elaborate on what I told Michael privately over the weekend: He is an honorable gentleman, and a worthy debate opponent. We both see the world very differently, we both debate hard for our respective positions, but we are both friends in the love of radio and we have both been on this site for many years. Regardless of whom I debate, it is always my intention to debate hard and even if (as is usually the case) nobody's mind is ever changed, that we walk away as friends. I often try to put some humor in my posts to help ensure this outcome. I definitely consider Michael a friend.

In a attempt to steer the ship back to the topic of the post...Anyone liking Mo's new show on Kfi? Is it growing on you? Me not so much but will give it a couple more tries. I try to b open minded...

I haven't had a chance to, yet. But I've found myself more likely to use iHeartRadio and listen to Conway live, rather than just grabbing his podcast after the fact. I forget how fun and sassy(?) the station is when you listen to it live. He's sounding really solid in afternoon drive. Keeps the show light and mostly apolitical, but covers a little bit more heavier stuff. He even grabbed Petros in the hallway during a live read commercial and got him to sing "Timmy! It's Tiii..... I gotta go, Tim. I've got a show to do." It was pretty funny.

John and Ken seem more tolerable as a later midday show for some reason. Not sure how to explain it, but this lineup just feels right somehow. But yeah, I haven't tried Mo's show yet.

(Heard a promo yesterday morning during Handel's show that literally was the VO guy saying, "Handel on the News will be handled by.... Bill Handel. "Handle", get it?")

Someone here said KFI is just 1990s KIIS FM but with talk instead of hit songs. And it's totally true.

Ever since the days of David G. Hall as PD, KFI has had a way with promotion.

Mark Denis used to voice their IDs in the 90s and each top-of-the-hour had a different liner before the ID. Some truly self-deprecating stuff like:

"How DO you spell "Schlesinger"? (pause) KFI, Los Angeles, more stimulating talk radio."

(EDIT) In fact, I found a rough cut of Mark's stuff from KFI (with one oddball callout to KEZY, where Mark worked earlier in his career):

I was late to the game, so I missed the Mark Denis years. Didn't start commuting down to LA for work/leisure until the late 00s and it was solidly Chris Corley by then. I liked the match-up with the female VO (don't know the name) who'd say the date (e.g., "Monday, January 3rd...") before Chris's top of hour promo.

Mark Denis is sassy in a 90s way. The current VO carries on that spirit, but in a lighter/friendlier way. KFI of today would never say, "Limbaugh eats liberals for breakfast."

But it does say, "The part of Bill Handel will be played by.... Bill Handel." Gave me a good chuckle. Well done to Neil Saavedra or whomever wrote that.

There are a few of those in this compilation. KFI has always been top of the game with promos and IDs:

I also like how they tailor their top of the hour ID’s to what is going on in the world or the time of the year. For example, this past week when it was raining for a couple days straight and there was flooding, their top of the hour ID’s made references and jokes about the rain. Or for Election Day, they made references to that. Clever ones too! They also had some good ones during the pandemic about how they had stocked up on hand sanitizer and toilet paper so they were in it for the long haul. Simple things that make the station more enjoyable to listen to.

That's something JACK (KCBS-FM) is also really good at.

Jack FM dominates at that. There snarkiness cracks me up. Yeah couldnt have chosen a better voice guy for it. Howard out of Canada I believe.

I also liked the voice guy indie 103.1 had. One of theres was "Los Angeles the only place where it takes 48 minutes to get milk and bread at the 7/11"😂😂😂

It's harder to do that I thought, too. Tried to write some "localized" promos for the station I worked for (not the one in my avatar — never worked there). You sit down with a pen and paper and write 10 or so, of which 8 or so cliche they're lame. One is solid. And the last one is acceptable, but nothing to be proud of.

It's almost like being a comedy writer for Letterman. For every great promo, there are probably 10-20 terrible ideas in the trash can.

Several years ago I read an article in Radio World by the guy who often writes about creative radio promotions. He listed out a bunch of words, jargon and positioning slogans that he suggested were overused, tired and should be avoided. It really threw me off because all those words and slogans were used daily by our station and most others I listened to, to promote both our signal and the advertisers.

Still not clear on why the change at KFI! Longtime listener of John & Ken and very suspicious of this slight change of hours.

I was looking for answers online and that is how I found this site. I also listened to Rush when he was at KFI and followed him to other radio stations online.
I also listened to Bryan Suits (Dark Secret Place), loved when he would fill in for John & Ken. I have listened to Bryan a few times online at his new station.
When KFI replaced Bryan (leans conservative) with Mo, I tried listening to Mo, but his entertainment banter & show style is not for me.
During the holiday break KFI had Mo fill in for John & Ken, I didn't listen.
Sure hope this isn't KFI's way of slowly doing away with John & Ken. 2-6 was the only time I would listen to KFI!

Ken is 65 and John a couple years younger than that. If anything, it is succession planning.

Tim Conway Jr isn't but a few years behind John kobylt but look at Handel in his 70s going strong. But who knows. I remember right after John Ziegler got let go at Kfi they had Bryan suits and Kennedy fill that then 7-10 time slot. Kennedy went on to do mornings on Alt 98.7 and look at her now she is on Fox business sometimes on THE FIVE.

Some talk show hosts will work well into there twilight years. Not a talk show host but look at Art Laboe worked well into his 90s. Rush God rest his show I bet would have done the same.

Handel's 71, and as I think I said earlier in this thread, that's the one that would keep me up at night if I were KFI's PD.

Now that they're in middays, if you start to hear John and Ken covering Handel when he's on vacation, that's a clue.

I don't mean to look like I'm trying to pop your balloon on Rush, but when I was at iHeart, we were very surprised that he renewed his contract for another four years in January of 2020. We were absolutely expecting a retirement announcement after the election.

Of course, the cancer diagnosis was just one month later, so we'll never know.

I'll say this: At one point only a few years ago, my thought was that if I felt good and my voice held up, I'd like to work until age 75. Now, I've been overseas, my grandchildren live 2,000 miles away and four weeks of vacation seems inadequate for all the life things I want to do. Don't be surprised if any air talent---Handel, John, Ken---starts to feel the same way. Especially if the money is already in the bank.
