The Voice of the Bills, John Murphy, suffered a stroke last weekend. Chris Brown filled in on play-by-play last Monday night and is likely to continue in that position until John is able to resume his duties. The statement from his family offered only thanks to the doctors and staff at Gates Vascular Institute for treating John. They offered no further information.

John started in radio at WLVL in Lockport and followed Stan Baron at WBEN. He moved into TV at Channel 7 when Rick Azar retired and moved over to WIVB TV when Granite broadcasting asked him to take 20% pay cut as Sports Director after 18 years in the position. He left WIVB after 4 years to go to work full-time for the Bills.

Chris Brown needs to learn the difference between yelling loudly with enthusiasm....and screaming like his pants are on fire.
 
If you watch or listen to "One Bills Live," you'll find that Chris can be an "excitable boy." Considering that he was thrown into the fire with minimal notice before the Monday night game, and that Sunday's game was anything but routine, I'd say he did an admirable job. Let's hope that John Murphy recovers fully and makes it back behind the mic before we get too deep into the playoffs.
 
Wishing a thorough and timely recovery for Buffalo sports legacy and Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame member, John Murphy. Recovery from strokes, even the mildest, cannot be rushed. Chris Brown, a graduate of SUNY Geneseo, has solid radio chops, having worked at WJJL early in his career, later moving to WGR, then to the Bills. He and Paul Hamilton were two of the objective sports reporters and analysts during WGR's bomb-throwing sports talk days of the 90s. Brown's play calling of the Bills-Patriots game was accurate and informative, and he was on top of the plays. In his defense, it's hard not to get excited on a game-opening 94 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and a second of similar nature in one game. If one was to offer constructive criticism, it would be to discern between excitement and pitch-raising frenzy. Every listener thinks they can call play by play, until they can't.

Play by play, done well, is very difficult, particularly in hockey. But there is definitely a difference between excitement, pitch-raising frenzy, and blood-curdling screaming.

He’s good, but just needs to adjust his pace and energy based on the situations.

You don’t need to yell during a timeout in the first quarter the same way you would if the Bills are 4th and goal, down four points in the fourth quarter, with two seconds left on the clock.

Everyone thinks they can do play-by-play and he is very good. He changes his pitch energy level and pace depending on the situation, he is NFL material.

Do you who if anyone, coaches the announcers. Not who might, but who actually does?

Eric Wood needs help pronouncing words. Sal Capaccio is very good but should be more polished.

Any updates on Murphy?

Chris Brown really comes off as high school level PxP, at best. Who coaches Brown? Not sure how this works in sports, but no aircheck sessions for the PXP guy? The undignified blood-curdling screams have to go. They sound soooo amateurish. I cringe whenever I hear him do that. And trying to force his own catch-phrase in saying "release the beast" every time Josh Allen makes a great play is, well, goofy. It SOUNDS like he's trying to have a catch-phrase vs. it happening organically.

Murphy was such a pro.
