JACK

A rebrand to dump the Jack licensing fees? Big 100.3?
There had been some speculation about sibling KLUV 98.7 rebranding as “Big” in order for EMF to purchase from Audacy the DFW rights to the “K-Love“ branding. That would then allow EMF’s national format to be launched elsewhere in the market.

But who knows.

EMF paid a nice 7-figure amount to Univision to be allowed to use "K-Love" in Los Angeles. Not a total improbability that it might happen in Dallas.

Something more far-fetched could be that Audacy merges KLUV and Jack FM into one station with “Big” branding. The leftover signal flips to a simulcast of KRLD 1080. Given the success of WINS in NYC after moving to FM, Audacy might make a similar move elsewhere. Or they could flip it to another format like classic hip hop. I think a rebranding of KJKK is far more likely or it’s just a concert announcement.

"Big 103" is their Adult Hits station in Boston. If they wanted to use that brand on 100.3, it would be simple

KLUV gets good ratings, so I doubt they'll mess with it.

what is happening could be Jack maybe dunking on the demise of 97.1 The Eagle.

is Jack in trouble in the ratings recently.

if they do that, they need to move "The Fan" to a new location on the dial and have KRLD at 105.3 due to the KRLD-FM calls being already there now. as in if 98.7 or 100.3 was to flip after a format merger of the 2 variety/oldies formats station, then have one of the 2 stations move the sports talk & "The Fan" branding to 98.7 or 100.3 with either new calls on either 98.7 or 100.3 (if 98.7 was to be the one that flips to the fan, then Audacy would sell off the KLUV calls and branding to EMF) or keep the calls on 100.3 (at least temporary) to re-launch "The Fan" while 105.3 straights up flips to the FM home of KRLD as a simulcast of 1080 AM since it's easier to not change calls on a station that has the calls already in place that also is shared with a AM sister station.

Since calls are not legally required except the once an hour legal ID, they can call the station "KRLD" even if the FM has different calls. There are already a number of such simulcasts where one of the stations has a different call set... such as WSB and its FM in Atlanta. In PPM markets it does not matter.

KRLD is no WINS though. Totally different markets.

If KRLD added an FM simulcast, I would expect a result similar to KNX in LA when they added an FM. If they just want to hold the aging (and declining) listeners KRLD has, then it might not be a bad idea.

My guess is 100.3 and 98.7 remain the same.

I am not sure what KJKK bills (maybe David or someone could clarify) but I cannot fathom Audacy dumping the current product when you account for the ratings and what is likely good revenue.

My guess is a rebrand similar to WBGB Boston, which is something I expected years ago. Jack FM without the name, saves Audacy some licensing fees.

You are greatly overthinking things.

Shuffling formats around the dial is extremely disrupting, as you have to drag the audience along…just creates confusion. Leave The Fan where it is. If Audacy wants to put KRLD 1080 on a FM frequency, they can easily move the KRLD-FM call to the simulcast, and come up with a new call for 105.3. The call is irrelevant for the sportstalk format. Betcha 99% of The Fan’s audience has no idea what the call is, and that number is probably low.

Audacy could rebrand 98.7 with little to no disruption if done correctly. It could essentially stay the same format under a new name.

An FM simulcast for KRLD? Possible. KLUV blown up for it? No way.

A rebranded KJKK seems far more plausible to me.

Guys, KLUV and KJKK bring in plenty of revenue as they are now. No need to touch them. Jack-FM is down a bit in the December and Holiday ratings periods because some of its listeners switch to Christmas music stations. Before the holidays, Jack was in the 3's. Jack has no DJs, no highly-paid, multi-voice morning show, no contests. Other than paying the Jack licensing fee and keeping the automation running, it's all profit.

I'm someone who advocates giving AM All-News stations an FM simulcast. I would imagine, despite its #20 ratings, KRLD is among Audacy's higher billing stations in Dallas. As fewer and fewer people listen to AM radio, Audacy may think about putting KRLD on 107.5. The Audacy Regional Mexican station on 107.5, KMVK, is tied at #18 so that might be the better station to sacrifice. The signal isn't great but I think that makes more sense than tampering with Jack-FM.

I know the Adult Hits format and the Classic Hits format share some titles. But they are far enough apart that you can't combine them. They really are separate formats, in both playlists and execution.

@Gregg. When did Jack return to being jockless? The conditions have to be right for Jack to reach over here to Tyler, given the KERA translator next door.

Tied for third in revenue. Yes, you are accurate in your estimation.

KMVK is now close to a tie with KLNO, a top 10 biller in the market. With the market increasing its percentage of Hispanics, I don't think they will abandon a growth format. Doing something with Jack is much more likely... as it is the bottom feeder... and a much better signal than 107.5.

Agreed. When i first worked with a 5-station same market common ownership cluster in 1963, I saw that up to half the songs could overlap and listeners would judge you by the flavor of the ones each played exclusively.

I think it's a fair conclusion that, at this time, Audacy is not going to sacrifice any of their stations for a KRLD 1080 simulcast.

Let's see what the Audacy financials say when they come out for Q4 and 2022... this week, I think. They obviously have to do something or they may need to change the company name again; I suggest "Titanic Media".
