Delilah Returns To Philadelphia

FEBRUARY 6, 2023

Audacy AC "B101" WBEB Philadelphia has announced that it will begin carrying Premiere Networks' Delilah from 7pm to 12am starting tonight. Delilah was most recently heard in Philadelphia on iHeartMedia's "106.1 The Breeze" WISX until its flip to Spanish CHR "Rumba 106.1" last March. She is also heard on Beasley...

Delilah actually worked live in Philly at WMGK when it was Greater Media. She had been in the northwest and GM Dean Tyler brought her to the east coast. This was before she left and launched her syndicated show.

I thought she'd be retired by now. Worthless show.
“Worthless” is your opinion. The facts, based on ratings, are different.

And… if you are not a woman in the 25-44 demo range, you are not ever part of the show’s target.

I always felt her style and audience was best served for middle America. Never thought of her as sophisticated or erudite. The show sounds canned and dated. Besides conservative talk shows, how are the ratings for non-morning drive syndicated shows? VT music would be more cost effective and would sound a bit more local than this show.

It highlights the ongoing debate between local vs. national, as well as the debate about radio being more than a music distribution service. Certainly having the morning producer do VT retains localism. But Delilah does a very different thing, weaving callers and stories with selected songs into a cohesive show built around a theme. This is way beyond local VT or another 10 in a row. Some people (obviously not all) want radio to be more of a companion. To speak with the audience on a one-to-one basis. She has the experience and the relationship with the audience that is hard to duplicate. And sure, it's not for everyone. But it's already proven itself in Philadelphia. She's a known commodity that has an audience, and they identify with her point of view.

About five minutes of listening to major market talk or sports talk radio should be enough to demonstrate “sophisticated and erudite” has zero to do with being in middle America or elsewhere. Likewise, “middle America” has plenty of smart, “sophisticated” people. Her show like many others is suited for whoever in the target audience wants it, which is not a function of supposed sophistication.

I didn't listen to her show last night, but I know its available as either fully-produced with music, or as just host segments and the station programs its own music. I don't know which version they're running on B101. Audacy runs the show on their Soft AC station in Seattle, plus she does a custom daytime show for them as well. So Audacy has a relationship with her.

The big flaw of Delilah's formula is that she tries to personalize the show to each station to make it sound local, but half of the callers have Southern accents. And I suppose if you're in the South, the flaw is that half of the callers don't have Southern accents.
