AM Frequency of the Week: 1600

So WAAM has 7 towers, but WCGO managed to be non-directional at 10kW? If I was WAAM I'd see if I could ditch some towers.
WNMP...WCGO did extensive radial conductivity measurements on several other AM stations, and changed and eliminated other stations, including WCGO 1600. I suspect that WAAM might be able to do the same by doing similar things, but only letting out nulls and such, and though due to WTTF 1600 Tiffin, OH, unless they could eliminate it, though I think it may be the only remaining First Local Service, and the FCC has enforced this regulation with what seems to be ridiculous levels of fervor. When WAAM applied go to 15 kW in Oak Park, MI, they had an agreement to eliminate WHLX 1590 in Marine City, MI.

Here's some WNMP...WCGO applications with some of those measurements and agreements.

Neither WCGO nor WAAM could eliminate towers at Night without reducing power substantially.

Here's the Exhibit showing the 1590 overlaps. The unusual looking contours are from the measured radial conductivities. They do a radial, and it is used for an arc around the azimuth. This explains the contours jutting in and out at certain azimuths. They usually only use the azimuths that are necessary and advantageous to demonstrate the lack of overlaps. That doesn't mean that the other directions agree with M-3, it just means that those directions aren't necessary in the overlap study. Chances are, the actual conductivities in other directions are similar to the measured directions in the vicinity of the stations measured.

Re: KLEB 1600 reception on Perdido Key, FL. 18 miles southwest of Pensacola on the Gulf. (5 miles east of our usual location due to building renovation).

Nothing audible on 1600 inside the building. So I stepped outside to the balcony with the C Crane Skywave. At first all I heard was a faint inaudible signal. Gradually, it became audible as I movrf farther from the wall. Oldies, Still very weak, and I didn't know what to thin. But then came a positive ID, Bottom line is KLEB lives, albeit with a different format,,,at least in mid afternoon when I heard them. And, of course, it turned out that 720 watts is enough for the 300-nilr hop across the Gulf. If only barely

I heard WAWA 1590 one Night in the late 1960s, right after Sunset in SE Michigan. I also heard WGLB 1560 Port Washington, WI, WMIR 1550 in Lake Geneva, WI, and WPLY 1420 Plymouth, WI that same Night.

I worked at WMIR for a few months early in my career in the 70s, Until I was able to upgrade myself from "The "World's Most Ignoredd Ignored Radio," Actually, in those days, the station was quite profitable, and I was mostly in sales,, with some production work on the side. A very easy little gig.

Anywaay I have no memory of WMIR being on after sunset. The station had a two tower figure 8 oattern directed east-west. So I could see where it would put a decent signal into Michigam. Perhaps to the chagrin of CBE.

KXEW - local here in Tucson since 1963.

It was in between Sunset in SE Michigan and Sunset in SE Wisconsin, generally a 15 minute sign off interval period. I may have heard actual sign offs on some of those.

WMIR only had to protect Canadian territory with their ground wave. There is a Canadian Critical Hours restriction, but it's two 1 1/2 hour periods, and they would only have to protect the CBE 0.1 mV/m contour within Canada. I'm not sure when that went into effect. The US Critical Hours regulations went into effect around 1960. WCAR...WDFN 1130 was authorized before that, so they were allowed to blast WNEW...WBBR 1130 with the equivalent of Class II efficiency 50000 watts in that direction during Critical Hours. I have heard people in Suburban NYC complain about it during the period between Sunset in New York City and Sunset in Detroit, probably a 30 or 45 minute period depending on which month.

Reviewing the Footnotes for AM channels in the 1960 NAB Engineering Handbook, there was a reference to review of all applications on Canadian Clear Channels to make sure they complied with Daytime Skywave provisions. Stations on some of those channels were limited to 1000 watts, and 5000 watts under certain circumstances reviewed by the international bureaus. There were also restrictions on stations on Mexican Clear Channels within a certain distance of the border.

Located near Seattle, in SKC (South King County). Daytime, nothing but 1590 splash, and some 1620 splash at times..

Nighttime, KVRI Blaine dominates, overnights they play the Sikh prayer music, which is quite cool.

I've heard a Mexican music station out of Utah, KTUB Centerville. KUBA in Yuba City I've heard once or twice. KOHI St. Helens OR used to come in a lot better at night than it has over the past few years. I logged KGST Fresno when they were Deportes in the early 2010s. Logged KEPN Lakewood CO once or twice back in the day with their sports radio format.

And KOPB Eugene with Oregon Public Radio a bunch of times.

But usually at night it's ol' dependable KVRI. Not complaining, mind you.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: KOKE "Tejano 1600" in Pflugerville, TX, with a moderate signal. During winter daytime skywave I've heard KRVA in Cockrell Hill, TX, with Vietnamese programming mixing in.

Sunset: KRVA comes up, and so does KUSH in Cushing, OK, which sometimes dominates. On rare occasions aiming NW I've heard KEPN (ESPN) in Lakewood, CO, and news talker KIVA in Albuquerque.

Night: It's graveyard-like mush. KOKE, KRVA, and KATZ "Hallelujah 1600" in St. Louis pop up from time to time. Aiming NE, I sometimes hear an ESPN station, which I suspect is 5 kW KGYM in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Sunrise: KUSH has a fair signal and dominates when it goes to day power. KATZ mixes in occasionally, KIVA is a rare visitor, and KOKE and KRVA return stronger at day power/pattern.

DX/Retro: XEAE "Radio Exitos" in Ciudad Acuña and KOGT in Orange, TX, used to be regular catches before they were retired. I have several one-time loggings on 1600: KLEB in Golden Meadow, LA; KMDO "Red Dirt Country" in Fort Scott, KS; classic country KNWA in Bellefonte, AR; KXEW in South Tucson, AZ; WMQM in Lakeland, TN; and WPOM in Riveria Beach, FL, which was airing Christian preaching in a Creole dialect when I received it.
