I think they are safe for now this Memorial Day will be 10 years they went from Deep Cuts to Oldies plus its the pet project of Tony Harris, just wish they would open up the playlist more...on another note, vinyl was kinda popular, they even made the book at times, same as Rock Nation on WRFF HD2 but I guess its what brings in the bucks that counts....Hope Beasley keeps WMGK HD-2 “oldies”
I know of a station in Missouri with 4 HD channels. The HD1 sounds like crap because the bandwidth is split 4 ways. The HD2-4 feed 3 translators on the same tower with music formats. On the tech side, if a radio station decides to eliminate HD-2 and HD-3 channels this may improve sound quality of the HD-1 channel.
Here's why- Use of HD channels can change data throughput available for the primary HD-1 channel that simulcasts the analog FM audio. Please see the table contained in the linked webpage:

Excerpt from FCC rules:
§ 73.403 Digital audio broadcasting service requirements.
(a) Broadcast radio stations using IBOC must transmit at least one over-the-air digital audio programming stream at no direct charge to listeners. In addition, a hybrid broadcast radio station must simulcast its analog audio programming on one of its digital audio programming streams. The DAB audio programming stream that is provided pursuant to this paragraph (a) must be at least
comparable in sound quality with a standard analog broadcast.
WOGL has 4 HDs. (Dance Party on 2, WPHT on 3, Phillies 24/7 on 4). The main channel doesn't sound bad at all. But again, they are probably splitting the bandwidth differently (Don't need super-high quality for PHT or Phillies)I know of a station in Missouri with 4 HD channels. The HD1 sounds like crap because the bandwidth is split 4 ways. The HD2-4 feed 3 translators on the same tower with music formats.
While that'd be fantastic for the listener, it would suck for the company, as dwindling listenership fractures even further. I would love hearing some of iHeart's streaming formats on HD sides, but then I wouldn't be listening to Q or Alt as much and revenue there would drop.It still amazes me that commercial-free HD music channels exist on commercial stations after so many years.
But, the fact that someone like iHeart hasn't used WRFF's subchannels for "Alternative Rewind" or "Smells Like The 90s" or WIOQ's subs for "iHeart 90s," "iHeart 80s," etc. feels like a missed opportunity to get some sort of clearance for national spots they're selling while also supporting each terrestrial channel's brand, at least a little.
They might as well do away with HD altogether for cost cutting. Zero return on investment unless it feeds a translatorI don't know how streaming rights compare/relate to OTA HD rights, but the Radio Insight article on "Audacy Atlas" basically stated that Audacy will be doing away with music-based HD formats as a cost cutting move.
