SA PPM Feb 2023

From RadioInsight:
Cox Classic Hits 101.1 KONO-FM regains its San Antonio lead despite a 8.1 to 7.2 drop. iHeartMedia AC “Q101.9” KQXT moves 15.2 to 6.7. iHeart Country “KJ97” KAJA trends up 5.3 – 5.5 – 6.1. Cox Classic Rock “106.7 The Eagle” KTKX surges 4.1 – 4.4 – 5.7. iHeartMedia CHR “96.1 Now” KXXM rises 3.2 – 3.4 – 5.2.

iHeartMedia News/Talk 1200 WOAI rises 2.6 to 3.5. Alpha Media’s 550/107.1 KTSA is up 2.5 to 3.2.

Alpha Media Variety Hits “102.7 Jack-FM” KJXK slips 4.0 to 3.1. Alpha Regional Mexican “La Ley 104.1” 720 KSAH/104.1 KSAH-FM rises 1.5 – 1.9 – 2.7

Based on the PPMs, most San Antonians listen to radio stations between 96.1 through 107.5.

Would it make sense for Cox Radio to flip 104.9 and give 96.1 Now some competition? A format similar to Hits 97.3

104.9 is a weak signal and a perfect compliment to the AM legend 660. They are doing fine with KONO, Eagle, Magic (although they could use a little boost) and KISS. I just dont see Cox investing/competing in CHR from here, it's a threat to their own cluster. Hell, even their STREAMING numbers are bigger than some great AM stations here.

The biggest hole I see for a direct CHR competitor to 961 Now would be ALPHA flipping JACK-FM. I know - I know... JACK is a sure bet for PPM, however, the allure is growing stale on that huge stick. Alpha has enough talent across their fleet as long as they can anchor a dynamite, local AM show.

Univision: KBBT should continue to be the direct alternative for CHR...VIBE 107.5 is trending up but still needs tweaking to start shaving off KONO numbers; they have been in pole position for 3+ years now. What's up with 95.1? What's up with 92.9 getting beat up by a weak Preciosa??

iHeart: They had a great book. Q1019 will live off the Xmas book for a while, KJ is milking the Bobby Bones cow, 961 Now is fine, WOAI is fine and now KZEP has a chance to own Fiesta with that format. The Bull (Classic country with great personality) has potential for moving up but signal limitations...

104.9 has a stronger signal than 105.7, which currently sits at 2.0 with only 145 watts. But it could be too risky for Cox.

I would LOVE 102.7 to go back to CHR. Unfortunately, I have no faith in the local Alpha Media management team.

I don't think IHeart and Cox Radio feel threatened by Univision or Alpha Media. They know Univision will play the same tune(Hip Hop & Spanish formats) or recycle a format that they previously aired. Sports Star- 94.1 PPMs increased in January due to the NFL Playoffs and the Superbowl however, football season is over. The spurs are doing poorly. I expect 94.1 to back under 1.0 in the next round of the PPMs. And, Jack has been on the decline since mid-summer of 2022. Alpha still can't fix that problem. Lastly, are there enough ad dollars to support three Regional Mexican stations?

Regional differences in Texas continue to amaze me. Here we sit in San Antonio with a rock station in the top 5, yet there is NO rock station in Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, or Austin.

This thread should relabel as Jan 2023 PPM since thats the book we started with... It's most likely the Billy Madison Show carrying the station. Ever since they syndicated, their topics went edgier and the appeal widened. I hesitate to say the current (or classic) KISS playlist earns the top 5 ... Their sister classic rocker is fired up at #3!

Except there sits KZPS. #3 in the Dallas beauty pageant. At last check, it is indeed a rock station.

Houston has both classic rock KGLK, and new rock KTBZ-FM, in its Top 5 6+.

KISS is doing well, that’s good to see. The Vibe is also doing well.
