Iceland shutting down 207 kHz longwave

Another longwave transmitter shutdown, just two months after we said goodbye to Luxembourg on 234 kHz.

Iceland’s public broadcaster RUV is shutting down its 207 kHz longwave transmitter on the east side of the island. It is now running a redirect loop. The RUV FM network has been expanded to the point where longwave is no longer needed. It has also been revealed that the 189 transmitter on the country’s west side will close sometime in 2024.

The RUV stations on 189 and 207 can easily be heard via Kiwi SDRs in Iceland, and also make it into the UTwente SDR.

Article in Icelandic, which you can copy into Google translate: Langbylgjan á Eiðum syngur sitt síðasta - mastrið fellt á miðvikudag - RÚV.is

I wonder how they will still serve the mariners, as Iceland has a fairly important fishing fleet. I suppose they all use satellite, and don't need RUV otherwise.

A similar question has been raised in regard to the BBC‘s 198 kHz transmission, with the same answer: Mariners now have modern equipment for weather information and other communications. They don’t need longwave. The BBC has already announced that 198 is headed for closure, but no definite date yet.

RUV used to have shortwave transmissions for the fishing fleet but dropped them some years ago.

The Greek public broadcaster ERT closed what was left of its shortwave service last year as that country’s worldwide mariners could now access the broadcasts via satellite.

Update: RUV’s 207 kHz transmitter is now off the air. Had still been running the redirect loop earlier in the day. Broadcasts continue on 189 for the time being.
