Expected format flips in the next few months?

Was curious if there is any expected format flips.

I know it is never truly predictable, but I wanted to see if we could have a fun discussion about it.

This may also be a good thread to include if we predict the Audacy troubles will result in changes

KREV will very likely flip to something

Why not an LGBTQ format on KREV? A) San Francisco is the nation's epicenter of gay/queer culture, B) The limited signal still covers SF's gay neighborhoods well, C) if local talent costs are an issue, they could just air the Channel Q programming already on a number of HD2's and 3's., and D) To my knowledge, there are no non-HD competitors.

Well, someone who wants to program an LGBTQ format would need to buy it.

I'm operating under the assumption that VCY America will still end up buying KREV. Their brand of religion is about as far from an LGBTQ format as I could imagine ;)

If Audacy isnt the one who buys it, and why would they.. why would someone put a format on it from their competitor?

Before 92.7 was KREV, it was a gay-friendly dance music station, and did reasonably well for their limited signal. It did cover the areas it needed to, which wasn't Silicon Valley or the inland valleys. But SF, Oakland, Marin, Berkeley, it did just fine.

Energy 92.7 . Flying Bear Media. PD Chris Shebel GM Joe Bayliss. Chris is now at KGAY in PS. Great guy!

Unfortunately 92.7 isn’t a very attractive signal. Struggles even in Daly City at times. Misses almost all of San Jose too. Its directional broadcast also gives it poor reception along 280. Just don’t see it succeeding. It’s probably the worst major Bay Area FM by population covered; even 97.7 or 101.7 have better coverage.

It’s very likely to go to VCY for a bargain. There’s a small chance that maybe Vanguard Media buys it and Pirate 92.7 continues in its form. That would be the preferred ending but that is entirely up to Don Davis!

Unless Alpha Media wants to purchase 96.1 or 92.3, or Univision continue to partially exit radio, I think we won’t see a sale. My buddy in the industry said Cumulus would trade some signals to Audacy in other markets for another station in the bay but I don’t know if Audacy would wanna part with even their low rated FMs. Likely only 92.7 sees ownership changes

Flip wise, entirely different subject…

- KVVF 105.7 continues to drop and drop. They have by far the best signal of the Spanish FMs. This is something I think they’ll do something with. I’m curious how their billing is, I listened to them the other day for 4 hours on some errands to get a feel for their format even though I don’t speak Spanish and they’re running close to no ads!

- KITS 105.3, another flop. Not sure what’s gonna happen.

- KSAN 107.3, so these guys have actually been doing some very slight playlist changes. I’ve noticed 2010 rock and 2000’s rock being played more often, plus they also decided to play a new Shinedown song. I suggested they flip to active rock and it seems they’re slowly going that way. This is probably a smart idea since they’d be entirely alone for the format unlike how they compete with KSOF and KUFX now.

- KRBQ (102.1) is also doing a bit poorly. though I’m not sure what they can try here.

I think you mean KOSF. KSOF is a soft-rock station serving Fresno.

Thank you, Michael! I knew I knew it, even occasionally used to tune them in, just couldn't recall the name. (I wish it were as easy to "defrag the disk directory" as it is on an actual computer.)

Yup, definitely did. Haha.

KOSF is quite a weird station in San Francisco, I’ve never heard of an FM formatted to 80’s variety. It manages to compete against both AC and Classic Rock.

Actually, I'd consider KBRG 100.3 San Jose's superior Spanish signal. Grandfathered at way-above Class B parameters, with a stick atop Loma Prieta, it covers not just the Bay Area but also the Monterey/Salinas market. The great height also gives it some coverage into the Sacramento-Stockon area.

It's a short-spaced class A so ... no wonder. It covers San Francisco and Oakland well enough. When Flying Bear owned it, they took the limited coverage into account and developed a format whose appeal was concentrated in its coverage area.

I hope to high heaven that VCY doesn't get its hands on it again. What a miserable, hate-filled format it was.

The signal doesn't really make it north of San Leandro, though. That's why there's the simulcast at 100.7. I haven't listened much to it lately - I should ; I speak Spanish.

If Audacy were smart, they'd play the classic alternative card just as San Diego's 91X and Chicago's Q101 have done and bring back the Live 105 brand. But I don't think Audacy is usually that smart.

I think the frequency is cursed, possibly by a music professor somewhere in the Diablo Valley ("where FM signals go to die") who must have kicked the bucket right after the KDFC sale and whose ghost put a curse on the station.

There's also the matter of Audacy's general ineptitude.

I like it!
Work for the signal.
Also, KFOG is still well known in the market, just a minor modification to it.

Median song age on KUFX is younger than KSAN.

There is nothing "weird" about KOSF's format even if the station moniker is a bit unusual. The 80s are the most played decade on most Classic Hits stations nationwide.

I could see 105.3 possibly going Classic Alternative if (a) Dave FM's ratings remain in the toilet a year from now and (b) the format shows some success elsewhere.
