AGM sells KJFA 840 AM

American General Media has sold KJFA 840 to KD Radio which also owns KDSK 1240/92.9 as well as 92.7 and KMIN 980 in Grants for $50k. However, translator K275AO 102.9 which is fed from KJFA does not appear to be part of the deal. It's likely that KD Radio will bring the "K-Mine" country format to KJFA 840, but will it be heard on FM? They could possibly have a lease deal with AGM to continue airing on 102.9 but if AGM plans to continue to program the translator where would a new program source come from? Since KJFA-FM in Pecos airs on the same frequency as K275AO they may not be able to use that as the source station unless there was some change in rules? Or would AGM add an HD broadcast to one of their FMs? The Latin Rhythmic format on the 99-watt translator does better overall than the Hot AC format on 105.1 so maybe "Fuego" could be moved there if any change comes to 102.9. Today there appears to be no signal on 840 AM (102.9 is still as usual).

Bringing the K-Mine format into Abq sounds like a good possibility as it would parallel what KD radio does with the KDSK oldies frequencies. An AM 840 stand alone sounds iffy as the 30 watt night signal from the southern part of the city doesn't really cover the whole metro area and the KDSK 1240 signal has already moved south. Then for country there's already KRST, KBQI and 98.1/KBQI HD-2 for classic country in the city. Time will tell what happens to the 102.9 translator as 840 has technically served as its feeder with the AM often off the air.
 
The Fuego top-of-the-hour ID now mentions KABG HD2 Los Alamos, so it looks like AGM added an HD radio signal to KABG when it moved to Sandia last August. KJFA AM 840 Belen is also still mentioned. KABG HD3 apparently simulcasts KHFM so maybe that helps expand coverage to areas outside of the 95.5 signal such as Los Lunas assuming that classical listeners are more likely to have an HD radio. So whatever KD does with AM 840 it will likely be AM only.

Just a clarification: "rhythmic" can be used to describe the tempo of a dozen or more Spanish language music formats, ranging from salsa to tropical to merengue to vallenato to reggaetón and on and on.

The Fuego format is most accurately described as CHR. It could also be called "reggaetón" although they play many other pop genres other than that one.
 
Word is out on the streets, so I can contribute that Derek will indeed be running a True Classic Country on 840 - a much more tightly curated version of Classic Country than his KMIN (Grants). While the successful IHeart Classic Country translator is really a "Country Hits of the 80's" format, Derek's version will cover the monster hits and artists tickling the 50's and tracking out into the 80's. I tell Derek this is GOING to be a huge success. Yes, on an AM. He paid about the price of a nice new car for 840.
 
FCC reportedly granted the assignment of the KJFA (840) license on 5/25/23, and the new owner KD Radio has requested a call sign change to KDNF for 6/01/23. Frequency is silent this morning.
 
It was on the air at 5 pm today - still "Fuego 102.9" at this time.

Apparently, they had to get a letter of consent from Daystar since that callsign is already assigned to a TV station in Arvada, Colorado. Must be really special. That original station also started on AM 840 too, but perhaps that was why the wanted that callsign. It was on AM 860 until about a decade ago when it was moved closer to Albuquerque to feed the 102.9 translator.

I'm in Santa Fe right now, which is too far away to hear KJFA(AM). The Pecos FM signal does really badly at my present location just off the plaza.
 
840 AM is indeed playing old time country music. I'll post an hour list of songs on the other thread shortly! 102.9 is still "Fuego" with a new top-of-the-hour ID as: KABG-HD2 Los Alamos Albuquerque, K275AO Albuquerque, KJFA-FM Pecos Santa Fe.
