Jay Scott Smith out at KYW

No. He was one of their best anchors. He would have been near the bottom of my list of KYW anchors to layoff. A great talent is now available to work elsewhere

How are their ratings these days? I read the most recent post of PPM’s and no mention of KYW. I know they used to rate toward the top years ago but they’ve slipped in recent years. I’d also be curious about the numbers between 103.9 and 1060. As someone who travels in and out of the area frequently, my preset is set to 1060 as I can receive that signal much farther away for traffic when headed back toward Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties.

KYW is tied for #5 in the latest ratings along with Audacy's AC station WBEB. So that's pretty good.

I think David has told us that KYW is one of Audacy's top billing stations in Philadelphia. Sports WIP-FM is probably tops but KYW and WBEB are right behind it.

Yes. They are third in billing, less than 10% behind WBEB and WMMR. WIP-FM is 6th ( but there is no current 2022 data yet available).

If we look at historical data, the first three months (I use three month averages to avoid wobbles) of 2021 was the first full AM/FM simulcast and they went from a pre-simulcast 4-9 to a 6.6. And then they have been in the mid-5's to mid-6's since then. That's 12+ of course... but KYW seems to do well picking up good local direct and local agency business.

For a station that presumably attracts an older audience, I’ve recently heard spots for national advertisers Discover Card, Home Depot, Loews and Proctor & Gamble products on KYW. Not sure if those are via local agencies or if Audacy has national deals with these (and other) advertisers.

Laid off on Thursday. A shame, as I really enjoyed his conversational delivery. Here's the story from the Inquirer.
That stinks. He really sounded like he loved his job, which (no offense to the other KYW newsreaders) is lacking in radio today.
Maybe it was just a case of last in/first out.

I hope he gets a ton of voice work from the exposure. I, on the other hand, have a voice made for print.

Very likely national buys. Geico, Discover & Home Depot are some of the largest national advertisers via network buys.

Fortunately he has landed on his feet (and is staying in Philly) as Jay is now a reporter for the local morning newscast on WPHL Channel 17.
