Kiss 95.1 signal issues

Still had lots of trouble listening to WBAV 101.9 last night, barely audible on I-85 near Boiling Springs / North Spartanburg.

I guess only 105.3 R&B (WOSF) is the best choice for now for Urban Hits from Charlotte even though the new translator in Greer (W287DF for WCKI-AM) really limits them, now their signal doesn't reach much past West Spartanburg, it really starts to drop off near Lyman / Duncan, but I rarely if ever will listen to 107.3 Jamz.

Spartanburg is not in the Charlotte DMA. Beasley (or any other operator) doesn’t care if there’s interference outside of the core market. They’re not selling any ads in Spartanburg. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Not long ago, I used to hear ads on V101.9 for a business in Spartanburg almost everyday...I forget which one though, but I was kinda surprised at it.

Disappointing they added that translator which now blocks 105.3 in both Greenville and parts of Spartanburg. Back when it was licensed to Gaffney, 105.3 had a good signal in Greenville, Spartanburg, and Charlotte. Then they moved the signal to the Dallas tower and it became weaker in Greenville, and then as a result they allowed the interfering translator.

Under normal operations, V-101.9 puts a good signal into Spartanburg and parts of Greenville. Perhaps they are still having some remaining technical issues. But I do know that WBAV attracts an African American audience in the Upstate, from talking with friends and coworkers. Meanwhile Kiss 95.1 has been strong in Spartanburg all week since they returned to full power.

There was a time back in the 90's when I remember 107.9 and 95.1 used to brag about their long distance listeners. I guess today the business model has changed, and folks can also listen online. But it is still a nice bonus in Spartanburg you can get a good signal from 95.1, 96.1, 101.9, and 107.9. But 102.9 and 105.3 can now be subject to translator interference in some areas.

107.9 definitely used to have a wide area listenership. I haven’t listened to Bob and Sheri in a lot of years but I used to be a big fan and IIRC Lamar was from somewhere near Greenville. Pam Stone is in the Landrum area and they talked about Polk County on the show all the time.

Lamar was from Spartanburg if I recall correctly. And I miss that Pam Stone program. They had built her a studio at her home in Landrum.

95.1 online? Doesn't Vegas have any stations that play the same 20 songs all day?

I was just pointing out that you do not have to be close to the transmitter to listen to 95.1 or most any station for that matter. I was in LV for work at the time.

I don't normally listen to 95.1 as the format is not to my taste.

Down in Laurens County and over to the Union County area as well, V101.9 has a pretty strong following, in Laurens and Clinton they come in like a local station, just can't get a HD lock on it. I have known people that listened to WPEG or WOSF, but those aren't quite as strong in this area.

I don't think it affects or helps V101.9, but they indeed have a following in the western/southwestern part of the upstate. Depending on the area, probably a toss-up with 107.3 JAMZ.

I like most of the songs on V101.9 or 105.3 RnB (WOSF) in Charlotte, seem to be more of the older popular songs from the 80s/90s which most stations around here dont seem to play much. Similarly I like V101.5 in Jacksonville's playlist, but I notice a huge difference with the playlist of other nearby stations, like 101.3 WWDM in Columbia and 107.3 Jamz, which don't seem to play much of those old 90s popular songs.

Also here in Gaffney it's very difficult but not impossible to get an HD lock on WJMZ, so I have a hard time picking up their other HD channels as well, and X98.5/Awesome 99.5 are also very difficult to listen to.

Not my primary format either on 95.1, but I just respect their strong signal and wide coverage area. I more often listen to 107.9 and 102.9, and would also select 104.7 but I am out of range. And there are a few Upstate stations I also select, such as Earth-FM 103.9, Magic 106.3 former 98.9, 102.5, and Awesome 99.5 80's music. For news, it's WBT-99.3 or 107.9-HD2, and now 98.9.

I wonder if the SC signal switch from 106.3 to the much stronger 98.9 will lure away any WBT listeners in the conservative talk format. 98.9 has a strong signal in Shelby, Gastonia and Rock Hill in the Charlotte radio region. Probably why WBT may have pulled Vince Coakley from 106.3 just ahead of the move to 98.9 so they wouldn't potentially be losing their own listeners in their own market.

Also, keep in mind WYRD-FM/98.9 has shut off the stereo carrier which makes a massive difference in fringe areas. I haven’t gotten to check yet, but I would expect it to make it well in to Charlotte with that benefit now, although I’m not sure if they have any translators on or around 98.9 (I know there’s a 98.7) that could bleed over, but with their low wattage you really have to be pretty close to the transmitter for a translator to interfere with adjacents.

Programming has never been WJMZ’s strong suit. It’s historically just done well by default being (until recently) the only station in GSP targeting African Americans. I don’t know what it sounds like now or has in a while, but back in the 2000s it was a weird combination of urban AC and urban/hip hop. With The Block now in all 3 principal cities, I’m not sure if they’ve gone back to a more urban AC direction but it seems more so than in the past. I have noticed WPEG doesn’t show in the GSP ratings anymore, seems like they stopped showing up after Block added the Spartanburg signal.

WJMZ is still #1 and hasn’t really been affected much overall by the sign on of The Block’s trimulcast as well as Rejoice 96.9, both of which I’d think would have taken WJMZ down a little more than they have.
