KGY in Olympia.

63 years ago in August 1960, the KGY Olympia radio station opened its new “over-the-water” studio set on pilings in Budd Bay.

The building was designed by architect Robert Wohleb & Associates, including Gordon Stacey Bennett, and built by Philips Construction in what was called an “ultra-modern” design at the time. The waterfront siting made it one of the most uniquely situated stations in the country..

Is that still there today? It makes me wonder what the lifespan of wood pilings is.

I don't know sir,,,relocated to East Texas a few years ago. Someone may chime in.

One of the most unique studios in broadcasting. It’s still there for now, but it’s currently under threat of demolition. I hope it sticks around.
Current use sir?

My company ran KGY/KAYO for quite a few years before the pandemic. It was the most interesting and historical radio studios I've ever been involved with. The Kerry family have been great stewards of the station since 1938. The biggest probelm with the studio building is it is in need of repair. Most of the pilings are still rock solid, but the flooring has some weak spots. The port lease is problematic...but as has been said, it's a historical building...I hope it can be saved!
