MISSING HD

Now that Iheart and Audacy are ditching HD radio's extra channels the FM dial is more boring. That Classic star on 94.1 is gone. The simlucast of 640 WBIN on 96.1 hd is gone, weird considering that that only NYC has more black people than Atlanta. Fox FM bought AM's and dont need 96.1 HD to feed its translators. 94,9 ditched theirs. I guess 98.5 HD 2 and 96.1 hd2 are the only origional formats left for Atlanta. I think wsb hd2 is called the Mixtape still and 96.1 HD2 is Peach. 106.7 now has the best HD for me with recent classics on 106.7 hd3. With the 93.3 tower gone I lost the hits and hip hop format on hd 3 until they ever rebuild.

It was actually getting an 0.2 share in Nielsen--except for WABE HD2, it got the best ratings of any HD subchannel without a translator. I wonder what Audacy's plan is--to drive people to their app?
1260 in East Point, GA. It's just used as a feeder station for the FM translator.
If nothing's changed, 1260 is a fantastic signal for AM, although it's a daytimer.

WRAS HD3 has a classic hits format, albeit an older one that centers on the 1970s.

Channel Q might be dropping nationwide tomorrow unfortunately
Not so sure of that. They’re still on a translator in Seattle, they’re being moved up on certain sub channels in some markets, and there is a host in mornings again (Jordin Silver) who was recently added.

I didn’t know they had any translators. And from what I heard they haven’t had any hosts for a few months so that’s good they have a morning host. But Monday is when the original Channel Q in California is going to be flipped because it’s been sold

I agree, the subchannels and Seattle translator are ultimately fed by the national Channel Q feed. KQPS just happened to the only full powered FM airing the format. I don't see Channel Q going anywhere.

The reason WRAS even has an HD feed is to give the illusion that WRAS student programming is still 24 hours a day. When GPB LMA'd that daytime hours, the engineers quickly took the station to HD and added an HD-2. So, for WRAS, the main station is HD-2 and the main channel HD-1 joins HD-2 at 7PM.

The classic hits broadcast is on WRAS HD-3.

When the University System of Georgia Board of Regents sold Georgia Tech's WGST to Meredith, they got some kind of commitment that the proceeds would be used for student operations at WREK and that WREK would be for student programming only, preventing what happened with Album 88 and GPB from happening at WREK.

You are correct. I managed the college station that belonged to (then called) Southern Tech in Marietta during the early 80s. I was the GM when we put those whopping 16.5 watts on the air at 72 feet HAAT. At the time, that was the first year Southern Tech became independent of Georgia Tech. With that in mind, I had a good relationship with some of the folks at WREK. If I remember correctly, the money from the WGST sale was put into a foundation that is managed by a board.

By the way, the station at Southern Tech does not exist anymore. It was class D on 102.5 so when the Mableton station finally got on the air after decades of fighting, there really was no place to put the station on the Atlanta dial under the FCC rules at the time. They tried another frequency and immediately got complaints and had to move again. Finally, the university lost interest.

I have a question about HD on car radios. This is the first time I have had HD in a car radio. I know that car radios have a much more reenforced tuner that draws stations in much better than a portable radio. I’ve noticed that I get a lot of stray HD info come over from stations far away, even though I cannot get any audio from that station. Is that a normal phenomena? I know that since WNNX dropped HD after the main transmitter burned up, I get the HD info for WSSL all the time even though I receive analog 99X. I can sometimes get WAPE’s HD info from Jacksonville on 95.1. A lot of the Greenville stations pop up their HD info over the analog FM broadcasts here.

Where are you located when this happens? For instance with WSSL/WNNX.

I get this mostly east/northeast of town. Which is closer to WSSL. I see the full WSSL logo and their description. But the analog RBDS shows the 99X text info. And 99X audio is playing. I usually get this too when listening to 99X on 98.9. WSPA’s HD title will occasionally come up on top while I’m listening to 99X. On my VW unit, if the tuner is trying to lock onto a local HD signal, the analog RBDS shows while the top of the screen shows the HD station trying to be locked onto. Then the HD text will show down below after it’s locked on. Replacing the analog RBDS.
