B87.7

If WVCC-LD is actually on the air, which I’ve heard it is, it has a surprisingly poor signal, and doesn’t seem to affect the B87.7 pirate at all.

Is WVCC a Franken FM or TV station? If it’s TV, there’s not much energy on 87.7 proper as there would be with an analog TV station.
B87.7 has a massive signal. It could be heard as far as Providence or Worcester or even into New Hampshire. I even heard it in New Jersey during a strong tropo opening.

I’m curious as to how a pirate station would find an engineer to hire. Anyone who has broadcast engineering knowledge would know the difference between a licensed and pirate station. And the licensed stations can pay significantly more than a pirate station.
B87.7 has been around so long and has such a high power. I would think they would need an engineer to keep them on the air.

It’s a digital TV station only

WVCC-LD is classified as low power, but transmits with 3000 watts, from just under 1000 feet, which is quite substantial on the low VHF band. ATSC signals are spread across the entire 6 MHz bandwidth, so the actual power on 87.7 is minimal.
One other possible reason for B87.7 being off the air lately, could be landlord pressure. The FCC has been heavily fining landlords who knowingly allow pirates to transmit from their property.

We haven’t seen actions like that here in Boston yet. The owner of the building where 87.7 transmits from has to know they’re there. At one them there were 4 pirate transmitting from there. Now it’s down to just 87.7 and 88.5 I believe.

The FCC has most often acted against pirates about whom they receive interference complaints from licensed broadcasters. Until WVCC-LD went on the air a few months back, 87.7 MHz was completely free within 100+ miles. However if WVCC-LD now chose to complain about B87.7, the FCC would have good reason to act. Given the strength and coverage of B87.7, they must already know where the transmitter is.

WVCC isn’t operating as a Franken FM. Perhaps they could apply for an STA to be a Franken FM, then move to the transmitter site of B87.7. Then sell the license to the owner of B87.7. That would then make B87.7 legal.

I thought owning a pirate station means a lifetime ban by the FCC from having any ownership stake in a legitimate radio station.
