Mix 96.5 - "The 90s to Now"

Gave KHMX a listen earlier today and noticed they are now positioned as "The 90s to Now", complete with a significant increase in gold product. Will be interesting to see how the change impacts their numbers since they've been pretty low as of late.

Definitely more '90s on their playlist now, and a bit of '90s overlap with sister KKHH, although not much. How long has this playlist adjustment been in place? I'm wondering if they're changes made in the new year that we haven't seen the results for, or if the changes have been in place for a while and haven't helped the station's numbers much.

It seems like a recent change. I tune in occasionally and don't remember hearing as much gold as I heard today. They played a lot of Matchbox 20 (and I mean a LOT, someone over there must have a crush on Rob Thomas) and rhythmic recurrents, but not nearly as much 90s/2000s gold as they are now.

Matchbox Twenty were a major staple at KRBE in the 2000s...

Also worth noting that they are mixing rhythmic with a little new country, I see Morgan Wallen and Walker Hayes.
Although country is seeing increasing popularity in the demo, I'm not sure this is a good idea. I don't think there's a lot of overlap between people who like early 2000s Nelly and people who like Morgan Wallen.

It's not uncommon in places like the Rust Belt, though.

And the Houston metro is fairly blue-collar, definitely differs from an NYC, San Francisco, maybe Boston.

Nelly is playing the Stagecoach country festival in California this spring. Morgan's not going to be there, but plenty of acts that his fans also like will be.

Remember, Nelly has a considerable history with FGL... where he became well liked by country fans.

The Morgan Wallen song they're playing sounds extremely pop-ish, and Walker Hayes is more pop/rap sounding than country... both seem to be a good fit.

Exactly. FGL and Hayes aren't my kind of country music, and that Wallen song I assume you refer to ("You Proof") doesn't appeal to me either, but diehard country 60-somethings aren't supposed to like those performers and songs. But for younger fans who have crossed over from '90s, '00s and even '10s CHR, all of that is very familiar-sounding and relatable.

“You Proof” is pretty poppy too, but the song they’re playing, “Wasted on You” belongs on CHR!

I haven’t heard the first song but I actually like Wasted on You even though I don’t like country music.

I noticed that I didn't pay attention to it much yet.

Whats the deal with mix and the spot? No song title, no more smooth Jazz or Rock on Mix? What are they doing?

Since early February the only Audacy HD station here with song titles is KLOL HD1

A hit is a hit. Waller has the number one album in the nation. Not just country, but overall.

Wasted on You would sound right at home on CHR or on Mix. Autotuned vocal, similar rhythm track to many pop songs. You don't even notice Wallen's country-singer drawl unless you listen closely.
