While $50K sounds like a pretty great prize if it is local and not a national promotion, do you think anyone will get excited about av100 dollar carrot dangling in front of them? I hope it creates some talk for WALL but I wonderWALL Radio Is starting a new contest giving away $100.00 a week by signing up at their website starting tomorrow. You are really comparing apples to oranges here. WSPK is a big class B station owned by a multi-market broadcast group Pamal a fairly big player in this market. It's CHR format is aimed at younger listeners, so they are not competitors of WALL's "oldies"format appealing to older listeners. While $50K sounds like a pretty great prize if it is local and not a national promotion, do you think anyone will get excited about av100 dollar carrot dangling in front of them? Not at all. I am comparing prizes and perception. 50,000 sounds like a big prize. $100 dollars does not, no matter what your demographics. The older demos may actually be less impressed by 100 dollars than younger listeners might be. I hope it does generate some word of mouth, but I don't think so. After watching Pat and Vanna give away thousands each day, a hundred bucks isn't exciting. No one listening is thinking about big group owners and small market budgets. They're thinking 100 bucks is nice but it ain't all that exciting. Still I hope it helps them. You are really comparing apples to oranges here. WALL is a much smaller local station owned by Bill Williamson's Neversink Media, which only owns a couple stations. WALL is essentially a small town AM station ( 1340) which covers much of the Hudson Valley via translators.
While WALL depends on local resources for contest money, I can almost guarantee WSPK's game is a national contest. Sister station WBPM is running a Big Cash Payout contest that is national. I find that ironic because WBPM used to decry the 'other stations' big payouts as national contest because that seriously limited a local person's ability to win.
The same can be said for Classic Rock WPDH Assault the Vault contest . It also runs in the Albany area on WQSH / WQBK
** It is great to see this board come back to life , after a long period of silence.

Its a national contest.
Im not knocking them, because a station i work for has participated in smaller scale national contests
You are correct $100 sounds like nothing compared to 50K . $100 is more in line with what small town stations offered in the age before mega broadcasters took over most markets . While $50,000 is attention grabbing the fact is your likelihood of winning is miniscule because you are competing with listeners across the country. The pool of contestants for the $100 is tiny by comparesome. Obviously a station like WALL could never afford to give away the big payout. Perhaps there is a way small town stations can work together to provide bigger prizes, but that would remove some of the local fun , with a higher chance of winning. Not at all. Just heard an all new jingles today on the Jim Frey show. Up till this point WALL radio has refrained from using jingles. As you mentioned contests isn't important and radio needs to be fun. This might be the turning point in the story for WALL with new jingles and better things are to come. The answer is not in prize money that the can never afford. The answer is in making the station and the contest fun. Take the pyramid approach. Get one major prize that can be traded. The have fun competitions with minor prizes like movie tickets and car washes. Each minor winner will qualify for a drawing for the grand prize which can be done at a big event. The idea is to get people talking about the station and giving away a hundred bucks won't do it. To try and group with other local stations would not work and would remove any competitive factors that might otherwise exist. Radio is boring. Until someone makes it exciting it will remain a bore. Yawn. Sorry I had "Energy 103" on and it was putting me to sleep. Talk about bland and boring music all at the same tempo....I need to get up and walk around for a few minutes
I finally heard the new jingles. I've always liked jingles, but being a dinosaur like the shorter ones which used to be played more frequently. The longer ones are ok and they tend to blend in with the 90s era music. I don't usually like the liners that most stations replaced expensive jingles with, but on WALL radio, did I hear Howard Hoffman voicing the liners?
