Bingo.
The issues at B96 aren’t new. This is a brand that has been really a shell of itself for some time.
Some may even argue that we are at the point in Chicago where there’s not enough room for 2 CHR stations, when you have Kiss and then a strong Hot AC station in Mix.
B 96 has not been the same since J, Julien, and Showbiz Shelly (later J and Showbiz Shelly's) show got canceled years ago. Drexx was a disaster before he event got here cause he outgrew the market. Next, Gabe and Nina was left to pick up the pieces and started to gain a loyal following. The station then bailed on them probably 6 months too soon.
They had a few jocks come and go to give the station glimmers of hope and now they are gone. Moving Julia out the city was a stupid mistake. Kenzie K just bailed and did not renew cause she probably knows the ship is sinking at the company and the station.
After all these issues, last thing B96 could hold onto was the remaining heritage the station had left which was the Street Mix. Yes, it was a shell of the days when Bad Boy Bill, Julian Jumpin Perez, Tim Spinnin Schommer, Brian Middleton, and Bobby D. were on, but it was the show that made B 96 famous across the country. Once they killed that, that was the downfall and they are just hanging on a string now. Could have turned off the lights then cause the party is over (no pun intended).
Kudos to the Beat Chicago (net radio), Chicago Dance Beat (net radio) and now 103.1 WPNA for keeping that spirit alive. Probably where most listeners who normally would go to B96 are now listening to on the weekends. And minus a few blips where Top 40 had a popular season of music, they are not coming back.
As for Kiss, they are garbage and get ratings by default. Look at their big decline in one book to explain that are not a well run station either. Some of that is the format, some of that is how they are run.
