before the Star burns out..

the final week of being a station in Buffalo, before the
e-MF'ers take over ...
Could, or maybe shall I say would someone be able to stunt on the exit of the ownership change ? Ie: play old Majic 102 airchecks, playing the extended mix of songs ( ie, tainted love by soft cell ), play YouTube videos _ audio only, obviously that are top 10 watch mojo best lists, or allow anyone who ever wanted to be in the radio come in and voice track for 2 hours and then on their ride home be able to hear their God awful breaks that they think is so awesome .....

thoughts ?

EMF was burned in Hartford when the WCCC jocks were allowed to go live for a farewell show and proceeded to ridicule the new owners with songs such as "Highway to Hell." I suppose something voicetracked and respectful would be OK, but a sophomoric "amateur hour" farewell stunt as you describe? This is corporate radio, not college radio. I'd expect professionalism to the end, perhaps even running jockless in the final hours with the standard playlist.

I'm guessing jockless, probably the final week. . as there are only 2 people there
* they are A1 professional *
however could imagine morale being low :(

if not jockless, simple " copy & paste " of breaks about generic Buffalo stuff. ..

Commentary - I am not happy with the sale of WTSS to EMF.

I'm guessing the overall vibe at 'CCC was much more rebellious than would be at Star.

True, but before EMF took over WPLJ NY, it was a totally different situation. Everyone was professional. Just a different market and organization.

I worked at a station that wasn't doing well. I was told on Friday the AM would be simulcasting with the FM on Monday and my show on Sunday would be my last. I did it and was professional about it but it was difficult.

I did some re-carting of the music library for the FM part time while actually working at a competing station. I worked several jobs in those days all media related. I didn't mind since I loved the work.

A year or two later while working on air at the part time gig the PD who had to let me go walked in. When I first heard they had replaced the GM with a younger guy I knew the PD's days were numbered. You don't often see a young GM with an older PD.

When my former PD came in as just another part timer. I was nice to him. I could have rubbed it in and been snotty. A couple years later just when I needed it, this old PD hired me for a full time position at a different station where he became PD. We were never close friends but I guess there was mutual respect.

In short, be nice to everyone. It was a small radio world in the '90's and probably smaller now with automation and voice tracking.

I do admit it would be fun fun to go out in a blaze of glory, but the fun would be short lived compared to the damage it might do.

It would have been announced by now if Star 102 WTSS, #5 in the latest ratings, was moving to another frequency. But that wouldn't stop an owner like Townsquare from flipping #14 rated 92.9 WBUF to Hot AC. I imagine there's nothing preventing WBUF from calling itself Star 92.9, once K-Love is on 102.1.

I assume WTSS's Hot AC audience is nearly all between 25 and 54, female leaning, excellent demos. Has anyone stated why EMF chose THIS station? Audacy owns 98.5 WKSE, Kiss-FM, a Top 40 station with lower ratings. Did anyone say "EMF wanted 110,000 watt WTSS because it can be heard in much of the Toronto market as well as Buffalo"?

I would guess WTSS is Audacy's best billing FM station. Maybe Talk WBEN and Sports WGR bill more, because with a spoken-word format you can sell more spots than a music station can. WBEN is #4 and WGR is #6. But on the FM dial, WTSS may be one of Buffalo's most profitable stations.

Are there regulatory roadblocks preventing EMF from gobbling up properties in Canada?
I don't think EMF has a foothold in Canada at this time. I suppose someone could sell them some stations. There are Canadian Content requirements (something like 50 percent). Be the 9th caller and win an official John The Baptist Winter Toque...

You have to be Canadian to own broadcast stations in Canada. EMF recently bought some upper NY stations that reach into the Montreal area, similar to the way Star will reach into Canada from Buffalo. Also, CAN-CON is 35%, something which would be difficult to achieve with CCM.

There does not seem to be any American regulation to stop American stations from pretending to be Canadian.
(or targeting a Canadian audience, to put it in better terms)
102.5 will have the freedom to be Toronto's Christian music station, if desired to be...but more likely "Christian music for Buffalo NY and our friends listening in from Canada..."
As for being allowed to own Canadian Frequencies, there are already Canadian sources that hold the Canadian rights to first grab those frequencies.
One main source in Canada is UCB (United Christian broadcasters)
UCB would go to the CRTC and cry foul if an American source could have a Canadian Frequency over them! (to name one possible source)
UCB: Belleville 102.3

They (UCB) already went through all the trouble of requesting a *low power FM for Scarborough Ontario.
(Scarborough is in the East end of Toronto, Ontario)
I wonder if that will ever air now? Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2021-142 | CRTC
NOTE: UCB took over in 2022: Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2022-286 | CRTC
(as I said, it would be easier for them to buy an existing Canadian FM long before EMF ever even enters the picture to gobble up anything Canadian)

*The low power FM would be starting from scratch as a brand new radio station and not taking over an existing one.

UCB & Canadian sources come first for Canadian frequencies.
Plus also, it would require 35-40% CAN CON regs, regardless, so they can't just toss on their American content.
Buffalo NY had more snow last winter than Toronto, Ontario.
Toques are not year round either.
Sign on in the Summer and look stupid?

Surely you know a jest, eh.?? I guess that's bad news for EMF expansion into Canada. No passport or Toque. The Canadian Christians certainly must offer a similar product...
