WADS gets an STA extension

WADS just received an extension to stay off the air while looking for a new transmitter site, according to FCC application # 0000213243. The FCC letter says the station must return to the air by 12:01 a.m. on August 13.

WADS, as Radio Amor, is still streaming online at amor690.com. Radio Amor, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 operation.

Merely some tangental reminisce here, from back in the days when three of us kids had longwires. We hasn't graduated to loops yet.
Two of us lived on the east sides of our streets -- 6 blocks apart. Both of us heard WXUR Media PA all day on 690.
Both WADS and WXUR were 500 watts directional then.
Between us two east residents was a fellow who lived on the west side of his street. His longwire got WADS atop 690 (and other CT AM's atop, like 800, 1450, 860, 1340 et al).
..... I don;t have a coverage map for either Ansonia's or Media's 690 from back when they were each only 500 watts directional, so someone here might know why WADS has such a brutal null away from Montreal in the day. Is that a recent null because of their newer higher-assigned watts?

That null must have killed reception (to the northeast) of WADS within a mile of the transmitter at night. The Montreal 690 was the strongest Canadian AM signal in central Connecticut.

I mentioning this from memory because its a long time since I've seen an old coverage map, but I know WADS could not go north because of Montreal, according to longtime program director Brad Harris. I once told him that I occasionally in the 60s picked up the station 20 miles north of Ansonia, and he said the station must not had been in compliance those times. Looking at the coverage map on Radio Locator, I think it has the same pattern now as it did at 500 watts. The station went to 1K in the mid to late 70s, and 3200 watts long after that.

WADS is a daytime, and had 4 watts nighttime at one point. Yes, I was able to pick up the Canadian 690 loud and clear at night near Ansonia.

WADS resumed operations on 8/10/2023 from a temporary site while negotiations are continuing for a permanent one, per their FCC application file number 0000219154, In the application's attachment, "The station requests temporary operation using an Information Station Specialists Model HPR.0990 antenna mounted at ground level. The station requests daytime operation with a reduced power of 100 watts."

Back in the day I think that 690 Ansonia had issues with it's second harmonic at 1380. 1380 being just up in Naugatuck.
If this only happened once... then I was their "on-call" Engineer at that time, and sure enough... They were transmitting a strong enough harmonic on 1380 to hear it a little distance from the tx site. (I checked on my car radio as I was driving up to investigate.) I knew it was something that must have happened fairly recently, as I knew it was fine the last time I was there, and the complaint was "new" (like just the day before.) So, I check the transmitter readings. All normal. Walk the long catwalk to tower 1. Everything looked OK there and in the tuning shed. Walk the EVEN LONGER catwalk out to the far tower, and open the tuning shack. Lo and behold, there was a MOUSE NEST INSIDE one of the tuning coils! So, I go outside to get a stick, come back in, and knock the nest out... IT WAS OCCUPIED! It got away before I could whack it... but with that nest removed, the harmonic was GONE. :)

WADS has suspended operations again, and this is in the attachment of this request to the FCC:

"Suspension of Operations Explanation
Radio Amor, Inc., licensee of WADS (AM), Ansonia, CT (Facility ID No. 54481) (the “Station”), returned to the air on August 11, 2023 after having suspended broadcast operations for a period of time due to the loss of its original transmitter site. A new site has been located, and negotiations are ongoing. Nova Electronics installed its portable emergency broadcast equipment and used this equipment to operate the Station for a period of three weeks for resumption of service prior to one year being silent. On September 1, 2023, operations were discontinued, and the system was dismantled and removed. Thus, WADS hereby notifies the Commission that its operations have been suspended, and Licensee will be working on moving to the new site. An Application for Construction Permit will be forthcoming shortly."

I had my HCRM-570 knocked off the air one morning. Drove to the site, transmitter would go on, then trigger an overload and go right off. After normal transmitter checks, I went out to the tower and a cow had managed to wedge its way between the fenceposts that surrounded the base, and it became a bovine radiator. I had to round up several residents of the village adjacent to the site and find some wood beams, but we pried the cow loose. I then had to settle with the cow's owner as the couple of cows he kept on the site were allowed in exchange for his watching the property..

@DavidEduardo These fine folks stared me on from the other side of the fence at the WCOP 106.1 Nebraska, Pennsylvania transmitter site several years ago

(thats not a typo)
