Gordon Lightfoot dead at 84.

I saw Lightfoot at Stagecoach in 2018, I believe. He was excellent, and he sang an extended version of "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" which was very emotional. He was Canada's folk troubadour. Farewell, Gordon.

I didn't know that song could be extended...
It had at least an additional verse about the native American legend about the "lake they call Gitchegumee". Some of the other verses were extended, such as the one about the mariner museum in Detroit.

I read the whole story of the shipwreck, and went to Sault Ste. Marie, MI., where one of the Fitzgerald's lifeboats was displayed. All due to the emotion Lightfoot's song brought me.

Canadians (and Americans) are mourning today. What a legend in folk and yacht rock, tons of great songs still played on the radio today. May he forever RIP.

Kind of rolling my eyes at the idea of a "yacht rock legend," as I've always thought of the term "yacht rock" as a snarky, semi-pejorative description of breezy, substance-free light pop/rock. Christopher Cross, sure. Player, for sure. Michael McDonald, yup. But Gordon Lightfoot hardly fits the mold. Which songs of his do "yacht rock" programmers mix in with the usual soft AC staples?

RIP Gordon!
Fosalie Tromble, famed CKLW music director found "Wreck" on A Midsummer Night's Dream"while she was trying to fill a CanCon spot on The Big 8 playlist. She. had the production staff perform an edit, and started playing it. The response caused the record company to release CKLW's edited version (still around 5 1/2 minutes) as a single. That song could have remained an obscure album cut were it not for Rosalie

He was still touring about a year ago. A class act and excellent artist...

We were planning to see him at a nearby venue, but put off getting tickets for some unknown reason, and I think it was only about 3 days later it was reported that he had passed away! He was a true treasure.. the Voice of Canada, and for those of us who grew up listening to him he was our own voice as well...
