No Astros Radio Affiliate in SA or AUS

The Astros have just won the World Series in 2022, and have won two World Series since 2017, they have won four American League pennants since 2017, and have made six straight ALCS appearances.

You would figure with that kind of success, they would have terrestrial coverage in SA and AUS.

I would love to see these two step:

SA—KKYX
AUS—KLBJ

I would accept these two:
SA—KTKR
AUS—1300 The Zone
 
In San Antonio, there are two Sports stations:

760 KTKR, an iHeart station and Fox Sports Radio affiliate. (50,000 watts in the daytime.)

1250 KZDC, an ESPN Radio affiliate with a translator at 94.5.


In Austin, there are several Sports stations:

104.9 KTXX and 1260 KTAE with a translator in Round Rock at 101.9. They are affiliated with Sports Map.

1300 KVET, owned by iHeart and affiliated with Fox Sports. Is that 97.5 translator, fed by KASE-HD2, simulcasting 1300 KVET? iHeart wouldn't have two sports stations in Austin, right?


You'd think all these sports stations would carry both Houston and Dallas professional sports teams. Astros and Rangers, Cowboys and Texans, Rockets and Mavericks, as well as the San Antonio Spurs. (Maybe there's a rule that only the Spurs can be carried in San Antonio, in the team's home city. But that shouldn't stop the Austin sports stations from carrying all three Texas basketball teams.)

Interesting that if you live in Austin, you don't hear ESPN. And neither city carries CBS Sports Radio.
 
MLB broadcasts often cost money.. and sometimes stations dont think they can sell it

and sometimes they take up alot of air time. MLB Games with pre and post game and take 6 to 8 hours of a broadcast day.

I worked at an FM music station that carried an MLB team. We only had to carry the 25 minute pre game and none of the post game... we had a special deal since our station owner was also a minority stakeholder in the team

No. It runs an Alternative music format: ALT 97.5 - Austin's New Alternative

This station does run PxP for the Austin FC MLS team.

In Austin the main NBA interest would be in the Spurs, helped by five NBA championships. I sense there is relatively little following for the Rockets and Mavericks.
 
Is there a substantial fanbase for the Astros in either city?

Also, both cities have minor league teams that are broadcast on local stations, which would be taking up a potential slot for the Astros or Rangers if there was local interest.
I lived in Austin from 2002-2012, and in that time period, yes, there was, what I would call a,“substantial” fan base there, although that’s just my opinion, I didn’t complete any surveys or samples.

I lived in SA in 1998-99, 2012, and 2014-15, and I would say the same, without any real research, just speaking with handfuls of people, that was my finding.
 
Since the iHeart stations in Houston broadcast the Astros games you’d think they would try to get their stations in San Antonio / Austin to carry them.
 
I was never in radio sales. But talking to various sales people I worked with over the years, it seems they could always find a way to sell live play-by-play sports. Businesses that wouldn't be interested in general spot advertising will listen to your pitch if you can attach their ads to sports events.

Of course, if the team demands too high a fee to carry the games, then the ad revenue might not support it.

I've been out there trying to sell sports and this is not the environment we have today.

A great deal of sports are available on video - essentially all pro sports and college sports, and some high school events (varies by school). I think most people will choose video when it is available. That diminishes the audience for live PxP on the radio significantly.

In general, the ad agencies in large markets don't prefer "sponsorships." They think it is more efficient to buy spots distributed through the day.

In smaller markets, the businesses simply don't have local decision makers who can be influenced in the way a local shoe seller could be 25 years ago. The advertising decisions are centralized, and that buyer in Charlotte gives not one rip about the Astros or their success.

And finally, the network/local splits for pretty much all live sports events suck. Years ago I did the log template for an NFL game. In 6 hours of programming, the network gave us 21 minutes. Fewer spots per hour than we would have run at very dead times like Saturday at 11pm.

There are three sports stations in San Antonio.

760 KTKR with Fox Sports.

1250 KZDC (not on FM anymore) is all ESPN.

94.1 KTFM is an ESPN affiliate.

Which is likely why the iHeart stations in SA and AUS walked away from the Astros network. There are 162 Astros games to run in a season. If they can't find a local sponsor to pay a premium price, they're better off running Fox Sports. There are more local avails, and it's more consistent programming.

Houston astros are carried in San Antonio on KYTY "Star 810"
 
KYTY isn't the best signal but I do think they still have a local morning show. It's interesting the Astros would be on a Christian music station.
