KLOS hd3. Armenian

I didn't realize there was an audience for Armenian music. I have no way to listen to it as it's not on TuneIn. Funny they are not targeting the Spanish population they might get higher shares if they did.

They are not after shares... there is no DST in Nielsen for any languages other than English and Spanish. They are after revenue from the very prosperous Armenian community, mostly in the Glendale and the surrounding areas.

"Out of all the cities in the United States, Los Angeles has the largest population of Armenians. In 2016, there were more than 200,000 Armenians living in the L.A. area, according to BBC."

Think of any US market with 200,000 persons... it is likely it has 15 to 20 radio signals on AM and FM. Here, there are just a couple of Armenian services, one being a cable TV channel that has beautiful facilities right there in Glendale.

There are already plenty of Spanish language stations, most on FM main signals, not on an HD channel.
 
So if it's 200 thousand it's still a smaller percentage than blacks or Hispanics not to say they don't listen but if they have a car with no hd they are out of luck. Hagerty what's your opinion on this?

They are going to go for the in-home audience. Just like tens of thousands of Persians rented SCA radios and then bought HD home radios to hear Farsi broadcasts, the Armenians will simply buy home radios and get adapters or stream to their car. This is a very wealthy community.

There used to be quite a few “ethnic” broadcasters on FM SCA subcarriers many years ago. Here in Houston we had several Asian language services using SCA. Nowadays these types of broadcasters have bought up basket case AM stations and revitalized them with their specifically targeted programming, as well as using FM HD subchannels and translators to reach their audience.

I don't really have one. David understands this better than anyone you'll find.

Beyond that, Armenians have been coming to California in significant numbers for more than 100 years and have made major contributions in business, politics and entertainment. Former Governor George Deukmejian is of Armenian descent, as is Cher (Sarkisian), investor Kirk Kerkorian, actor Mike Connors ("Mannix"), who was born Krekor Ohanian, and the Kardashians (does Adrienne Barbeau---Armenian on her mother's side---make up for them?).

They have also made invaluable contributions to California agriculture:

Don't know why this thread is titled "KLOS HD3. Armenian"... The last I heard KLOS HD3 is a simulcast of KIRN 670 ("Radio Iran") which features Persian/Farsi language programming...BTW there are several other "FM HD" Persian language stations.

Fresno, has for generations, has a large Armenian community. Mike Conners was born there.

I know a distant---but close enough to occasionally get invited for an extended family event--member of the Kardashian family but she has a regular career and is completely normal.

Plus all Armenian programming on OTA KIIO-LD Ch 10. Xmitter on Flint peak covering the Basin and the SFV and SGV Valleys.

I just went to their website and it promotes that kIRN 670 (Radio Iran) is simullcast on 95.3 HD3. Plus yesterday I checked both stations and they're still operating as they have been for years.
 
I'll have to check tonight because at this moment KIRN is on both 670 AM and 95.5 HD3. I guess I've been in the dark for a long time if they've been doing this for three years. Guess I've never tuned in to KIRN at 8 PM.
 
I heard KIRN absolutely blaring out of a neighbor's apartment last summer (mainly due to old age/hearing troubles, not necessarily "talk that rocks" :LOL:) and had to cross-check with my little am/fm portable to find out what station it was. They've certainly got their listeners out there!

My Sangean HDR-16 receiver reads “KIRN Radio Iran” on 95.5 HD3
