KECG El Cerrito

Programming control of KECG has been taken back by the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD). Much of the content , especially during non-school hours had been produced by the WorldOneRadio folks.

A story about shift in programming can be found here:

If you can tolerate a rambling, very incoherent discussion on the matter from a former WorldOneRadio "manager" you can go here:

(I dare you to read the whole thing! )

Frankly, I am happy to see the change back to a student-focused station. The only loss is for now is that KECG no longer streams on the Internet.

I stopped when the former manager mentioned not making a "pots and pans protest or Radio flyer protest", because I was laughing so hard. How was this person ever put in charge of programming the station? Maybe he can apply for the manager position at Pacifica or whichever Pacifica station had the open manager position.

my head hurts.. big time. lots of rambling, stuff that has nothing to do with this and the issue not clearly explained.

As one clark griswold said, " "Hallelujah! Holy sh*t! Where’s the Tylenol?"

Well I'll tell you something. I attended this high school and took one of "his courses" and the man simply wanted to control everything in terms of programming. Been doing this for 27 years. Students had a very little say about running their own radio shows on KECG. He only gave small blocks of airtime for students to do their shows. There was simply no freedom and only wanted to control the station to himself under his own "brand."

I speculated something weird was going on years back and glad someone finally brought this attention to the district until now.

What a messy radio station webpage. Hopefully the district creates a better one and brings the stream back as Gaucho Radio.

Radio back to the students, enough of the me me me. Regretted taking his childish class.

Was his class as rambling and disjointed as his blog post? How did he last 27 years programming the station?

Yes about on par with his Tylenol writing skills. Very loco with an out of touch 70s smoke and pot mentality. Disorganized class in terms of lectures and intros of his journalism and mass communication courses. I don't miss it at all.

No clue how he got called out until now. Likely a curious parent came into his class who works within the broadcast industry and evaluated the class and created a detailed report to the district.

He's been yapping on social media and telling his own friends to make a comment on how they feel about his boot. Literally not one student backs him. And goes off tangent and talks about teacher unions, unfair pay, medical leaves and bank accounts. Has nothing to do on this issue while killing off his reputation as an instructor.

Looks like this is now their new webpage: KECG Radio / KECG Radio Home

Hopefully a schedule will soon follow. Unlike the wacko who never created an organized programming schedule for students. Just covering up under his own convenience.

"The way Mr. Rat Tail plays the music, his choices, his programming introduces and brings students to music that they haven't heard"

Yeah, yeah, yeah and what about the students creating their own radio shows and choices? Cringe! :cautious:

Yes, but the students need to learn that in entry level positions they won't be programming radio stations or streams or selecting their own music. They will be following a station policy and playlist.

So, they need to learn the basics of programming formatics and techniques for scheduling music, writing promos and all the other jobs they may be assigned to.

Yes those elements are a necessity, hopefully the new director has a better strategy in working with students of assigning "real life" skills rather than tangents.

When I took this course we never did any of this at all.

I get that. But stations of that type are teaching experiences in real time, not a hobby. The fact that one instructor was beyond bonkers does not change the training purpose of student stations.

Well I hope for the best to these students and get the best out of educational radio experience. They deserve someone better as they fulfill their educational needs for their future career paths. At least they have this option other than KALX.

I noticed an (assume) East Bay pirate on 87.9 . It's playing Cuban music and other LatAm genres. No IDs or announcememts but it does carry RDS, a simple placeholder ID of *RDS* Adjacent to 88.1 KECG and other stations on that channel.

Might this be a San Francisco pirate instead?

Have you driven your neighborhood to get a sense of how big an area this "station" covers? Often these are Part 15 microtransmitters, and the owner is just using it to "broadcast" their own music throughout their home, or inside their vehicle, or to close-by neighbors/friends. Those devices sometimes have 87.9 as a frequency option, but they shouldn't get very far beyond a radius of, maybe, a couple hundred feet (unless they've been illegally goosed in some way).

Isn't there a FrankenFM based in San Jose? That might explain it.

yes KBKF-LD. They were broadcasting Air1, but i think they switched to Radio Guadalupe.
That's what I recalled as well. I only ever heard it in the car in Oakland, and the car placed it at 87.7.

What is "Cuban music"?

Celia Cruz and tunes from the Camagüey campo... Suficientememte cubano.

Seriously. The 87.9 statiion had coverage for a good 10 miles' radius. The only hassle was all those in-car modulators that would occasionally pop up as interference. The pirate signal was absent on Tuesday. It is not the San Jose 87.7 Spanish-language Catholic signal which can be heard in Oakland and further north.
