91X vs 94.9 Currents Top 20

Interesting. The top two currents on Alt are getting more combined plays than that entire top 20 list on 91x.
What’s the point of bragging about a station’s currents when the average listener would be lucky to even hear it?

it shows that even if classic alternative is affecting 91X's potential of upping new music, they actually play new music while 94.9 is playing Enemy 46 times a week.
I am advocating and always asking 91X to up the new music, but I'd rather hearing a classic alternative station knowing some new songs actually get played that the corporates barely play or don't at all than a boring corporate station not playing 2023 songs and most of the top 20 being recurrents from 2-3 years ago and Post Malone lmfao
To me the point is if you want more currents, you have a station. If you don't, you also have a station. There's no purpose in homogenizing the two.
no my point is upping the 40 currents they have, but playing them more than one hour
that'll get engagement for san diegans who are disappointed or unaware new music exists on 91x still
that'll spread word of mouth
that'll make the top 91 lists even better
everybody happy.
My guess is that 91X leans more toward grunge and Classic Alternative than 94.9 and 94.9 features a mix of new and classic Alternative which includes grunge.
91X just played "Stuck on You" by Failure over the air.
They get a pass in my book for that alone. Haven't heard that one on that antique known as a radio probably since it was released!

Of note is that there is not ONE song duplicated in these playlists. Okay, I looked again. There is one song...Foo Fighters. So for the most part, each station is picking from their own lists of currents. Although 94/9 is decidedly more mainstream and corporate from the looks of their list....and they are still playing a good amount of the Kate Bush and Maneskin hits, even though by now they are recurrents.
I heard Alt 98.7 a couple of weeks ago playing Harry Styles, now that the higher temps (inversions) are causing a few LA stations to jump down here like locals every so often. I never saw him as alternative, but maybe he is now.

Most of the iHeart Alts have been playing “As It Was” a lot for the past year. I wouldn’t consider him alternative, but it’s not a bad a song and it sorta fits with the playlist, so there we go.
I wouldn’t hate them for that - it’s literally the title of their music video for it on YouTube (“Enemy (from the League of Legends)”).
Harry Styles is not alternative.
Would the same go for Avril Lavigne? I do recall circa 2002 when "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi" got some spins on alternative but nothing like top 10 or so. How about Simple Plan? Even with their pop/punk sounds, I don't remember "Perfect" or "Shut Up" or "How Could This Happen to Me" being on alternative at all. I think both got more success on CHR than alternative. Then again, around like 2004-ish, alternative was leaning away from punk and nu-metal stuff and getting into the indie sounds.
I remember hearing Sk8er Boi on alternative stations. It was one of those weird songs that could totally fit the alternative sound, kind of sounded like Paramore, but many alternative stations wouldn't have touched it because she was promoting as a pop star. Had it not been for that fact, it would have worked. For that matter, Miley Cyrus and even Taylor Swift have put out a song or two that might blend well with alternative if not for the fact that they were being promoted as pop. So on that note, maybe Harry Styles CAN work as alternative....I just see that song as too melodic pop to work, but "As it was...." I've been a listener to alternative since I was a teen in the 80s, and there were a few artists that were worked to alternative (or whatever it was known as back then) because nobody was sure how to classify them. I had even heard that very early Madonna "Burnin' Up" was even given some alternative airplay initially, but once she was classified as pure pop, out she went. It would be nice for alternative to just play songs, even by pop artists, if they don't exactly play as mainstream pop, but for the most part alternative refers more to artists than songs.
