All-Access : WLFP (94.1 The Wolf)/Memphis To Move To 99.7, 'Sunsetting' Hot AC WMC (FM 100)

I see that Audacy just filed to move the WLFP calls to Hartford for its Rhythmic CHR Hot 93.7fm. They are also requesting to change 94.1 to WMLE. WM(emphis)L(ove)E? EMF is bound to change 94.1's calls again once they take over.

Why would Audacy do EMF's call letter change paperwork, especially if EMF is "bound to change" the call Audacy so kindly goes through the trouble of registering for EMF? And why is WLFP so valuable a set of letters that it needs to be slapped on a Hartford station, especially a major player in Hartford radio than some peashooter AM, which is where calls with perceived value to the company that's holding onto them usually get parked? LFP must stand for Let's F'in' Pretend any of this makes any sense.

EMF usually changes their call letters to where they contain some combination of K, L, or V for K-LOVE and A and I for Air 1, unless they've run out of usable combinations.

So is 94.1 going to be Air 1, or will they move K-LOVE there and put Air 1 on 94.9? Also I'm guessing that Flinn will change 96.1 to something else (Nothing new for him), so that will be another possible coming change.

What does this make, 6 or 7 stations that will have moved or changed formats because Audacy decided to kill FM 100?

In Dyersburg there was WASL 100.1 FM, that went by the name SL 100, probably trying to sound close to FM 100 and playing AC in the 80's and 90's, and some people thought it was FM 100. Some of the music was similar (although they went softer at times), but definitely not FM 100 in Memphis. Later they went to classic rock and now Jack FM.

I remember a period in the '90s (right before I moved away from west TN) when they mixed in what was then current country, along with the other music that they were playing at the time. Not sure how long that that lasted.

CTListener: Keep your comments up Norf. :) I am not on here much to mess with you, so I have to get my shot in.

This call letter branding scam commentary on here is kind of like brown countertops and country motifs in houses. Just completed a survey of 1200 people and will have exact results soon, but we are in an age of radio where everything STILL matters. WE ALL know this. Corporate radio has taken upon itself to self proclaim so many false beliefs that have cost TRILLIONS in lost revenue, lost connections or not maximizing each signals potential. So, as I heard and saw the responses, from legit listeners things that connect are indeed the connection of uniformity and repeats, as subliminal as stupid, worthless call letters. IT CREATES comfort. It sets radio apart. It's part of the magic. It does NOT mean people can tell you the actual call letters or say Y'all 106 has call letters that are...WYAL in Nashville That station is for real, by the way. Randy Travis flipped the switch. But the call letters need to make you connect and if that adds time to listening, that is a win. If that help one person tell another to listen, that's a win. It CAN TILT the ratings. It does not always obviously specifically directly attach to ratings, but it can help.

As for WMC in Memphis. I would suggest if it were my station that I would absolutely make the MOST of WMC's branding as Memphis's's Country station. And tell people all day long "you ask...we listened." Now help us build this. Indirectly, listeners did want a change and wanted MAX Country, etc. Give em what they want. I would rebrand completely WITH WMC in mind. If the call letters were bad, or even four letters (clean) maybe not as important. But, you just ripped up the radio market and you have to heal and save face quickly. That probably will NOT happen and that's what will lead to this being a bit of a questionable move. It's NOT what they are doing at this point, it's HOW....

Changing call letters may not affect many stations as much, but like we have mentioned before on various threads...if they don't matter why have many of the stations that have returned or rebranded felt the need to throw away tarnished calls or bring back the success of the past with famous calls. There are no call letters on the internet. That may be so-2023. But, when you are given lemons that you have to drop the ID hourly, why not make magic. in this day and a $ g $ e, every listener and every dollar do matter. WMC is smart. Throw away WMC you just told a city your corporation does not really care about YOU.

Long rant. Lots of repeats. But it's time for the corpoate butts in the seats to stand up and embrace what they have, not look for ways to fail in in direct off-shoots of an actual failure. That should be the gravy. Stop sinking ships and think of smart ways to sail into the damn future....

P>S> My previous comments are also to help BigA's head come swivel his neck faster than a twisted twister... Y'all (Ya'll to CT cause he is never right, lol) needed something to get you talking since this Mempho madness is so insane. AND EMF will have a lot of li$tener$. $hocklingly $o many. Take that to the radio bank.

JeeperOne, is that YOU impersonating Tibbs4 with ALL THOSE unnecessarily CAPITALIZED words???

PS -- Who's Norf?

PPS -- You don't last 35 years as a copy editor without knowing that it's "y'all" and not "ya'll."

Hey Tibbs, are you addressing that to me?

P>S> My previous comments are also to help BigA's head come swivel his neck faster than a twisted twister...

That's what I thought. Here's my predictable response. You like heritage. You like heritage in Memphis, and you like it in Nashville. That's why you want WKDF to return to its rock roots. I get that. These companies don't have your experience. They're not in the museum business. You want them to bring the past into the future, and in these two cases, I don't see them doing that. But I like your approach to the change at WMC.

Given the current financial situation at Audacy, that company is doing things I'd never have expected them to do as Entercom. By that, I mean they're taking heritage Entercom properties and completely blowing them up. They're doing that in Buffalo and Memphis. I think the only reason they're doing this is because of their current financial situation. They're treating these stations as though they're already in bankruptcy and their lenders are running the place. That's my take. I don't have insight into their Memphis revenues, but my sense is they feel they can make more with country than AC. And the only reason I say that is because of the money they're spending in your home town, a city where they own no stations.

As if that matters to anyone but sentimental radio geeks.
While that is true, if/when a station gives up its longtime call letters, that opens the door for said station to change its call letters every year from then on! I know of a couple of stations in Ashland City and Clarksville that have done this. Hard to keep track of their calls because they change so often anymore!
