Good Morning. Does anyone Remember J Paul Emerson ? He did The News in the morning on Hot 97 In the Mid to late 80s. First with Stevens & Gridnic & then Howard & Stephanie. I always thought he was underrated. He had such a unique & clever way of doing the News. He deserved more credit Than He got.

Looks like good ol' Market No. 1, New York City. I Googled "Hot 97" and "Howard and Stephanie" (figuring that some of the other names might be misspelled or too obscure) and several references to the NYC station came up.

Well, this is the New York page so I guess we can assume we're talking about the New York market. Howard & Stephanie are Howard Hoffman and Stephanie Miller. The station was Hot 97 WQHT. Hoffman had been on WABC 770 in its last days as a music station. Miller continues today as a syndicated Progressive Talk host, heard on Sirius XM weekdays 9 to noon ET, 6 to 9 a.m. PT.
J. Paul Emerson did a three-minute newscast several times per morning. Very dramatic and excellent writing. He always made heroes of cops and firefighters. If a child died in an accident, I remember he'd describe it as "a little angel has gone to heaven."

I don't think I ever heard Emerson on Hot97, but he later came to San Francisco and was paired, IIRC, with Gary Bryan on the 1990's FM reincarnation of KFRC when it was at 99.7. (KFRC-FM bounced around over the years, from 106.1 to 99.7 to 106.9.) Emerson was initially just the newsman for Bryan during AM drive, but over time took on a more prominent and inflamatory role, adding a lot of over-the-top commentary into what was otherwise a music show. He was eventuially shown the door when he said something that was unacceptably offensive. (I wish I could be more specific, but the details have faded after 20-someodd years.)
