KSFM 102.5 fires its airstaff

My guess (being out-of-state, who knows) is Audacy is planning to flip to Classic Hits to fill the KCCL void. "Big 102.5" anyone?

Would be a shame if it exited the Sacramento airwaves. It is (was?) a great example of Rhythmic CHR, also sprinkling in some throwbacks to hedge against the also great local Rhythmic Classics station V101.1.

Most companies are probably now looking at AI to replace on-air hosts.
It's still too new and in development. I suspect we will see it rolled out in non-prime dayparts experimentally before the prime daytime shifts are generated that way.

I can see it used for holidays and sick days and vacations, too. But not an overnight change by major stations. We all want to experiment, but not with high billing stations and established hosts.

According to the May 2023 Nielsen Audio ratings, it dropped 3.4-2.9 but it usually does well.
That is a "well within margin of error" wobble. You have to see if it further declines in additional months before blaming programming.

Look at the multi-month data at Ratings - RadioInsight and you can see that wobbles like that are common and usually meaningless.

I "hope" you're right........but......I think it's a bit naive to think that most major broadcasting companies wouldn't replace live human beings in a SECOND with reliable AI. It will save them tons of money. They have already done this with other processes. The biggest complaint I heard as a producer and air talent towards the end of my career was "you have too much personality and are too stylized, we need someone more 'generic' sounding". AI fits that bill! You can customize "prototype" voices for each format and program them to read the liners in each market. Cheaper and faster than having a human being voice-track multiple markets. Again, I sure "hope" it doesn't go that way... but I would be money that it will.

The difference between a good DJ and a so-so DJ is quite slight. A turn of a phrase, a friendly word or two. I am not convinced that AI is up to the task right now. A few years from now, maybe.

Do you seriously think most major media companies care about that? All they want now is someone/something to talk about station promotions and read ad copy. This is what they've been waiting for. Until that mentality changes, this is where the business is headed.

The AI thing is interesting. It may be more expensive to pay a service currently for software and support for the AI than it is to have an already existing person in (insert city here) to voicetrack the shift for free/peanuts.

As for KSFM, I am pretty certain this is just a tweak of music. You don’t hire a “brand manager” normally and let them go after two months…

They’ve embraced Hip Hop and R&B in their imaging instead of hiding it. It sounds like they’ve moved away from their sister
station, the End musically. At least that’s what I noticed when I was up there last week.
That also explains why Audacy just announced “DJ Complex” as KDND’s new brand content manager, so look for 106.5 The End to make tweaks in their Top 40 direction.
