Canada's Streaming Act forces CanCon regulations onto streaming media

Looking at this from the outside, it seems like more heavy handed CanCon regulation north of the border, and a slippery slope for Internet regulation there in general.

It only makes sense. Can-Con was originally designed to stop American and other foreign artists from dominating the Canadian market to the point that there was really no Canadian music industry (I was told this by a prominent Canadian musician I interviewed in the 1980s). After Can-Con, there were Canadian record labels, Canadian music publishing companies, etc. So it helped build and maintain a Canadian industry. If music consumption is going away from music sales and terrestrial radio and heading online, it only makes sense that streaming services in Canada adhere to Can-Con.

To Americans it may seem to reflect a provincial attitude towards the reality of the global music market, but if I were Canadian I'd probably see it as a positive.

Where one of my relatives live, there was station that featured a heavier dose of Canadian artists and it's in the US. The program director is Canadian and had the blessing of the owners to do that. This was awhile back and since then the owner retired and station fell to the EMF thing.
