The License to Cover Application for WISN 1130 was filed in February, 1965. It was not granted until 1967. I think it was around August, 1965, that I heard it at Crystal Lake near Frankfort, MI during Morning Critical Hours. It was on a 1960 vintage Magnavox transistor radio. They said they were now Wisconsin's first 50000 watt station, which confused me because I thought they were still on 1150, because it was difficult to tell the exact frequency in that range on the slide rule dial.
I first heard WISN in late spring when I got home from my junior year of High School in Honolulu. At first I was a little surprised, because I didn't know the move was coming. But I knew that it made sense for WISN because 1130 was pretty much empty day and night. (WDGY from Minneapolis was an occasional visitor on day power/pattern around sunset).

Speaking of Honolulu... The usual occupant of 1130 there in those days was KLEI. 1kw ND from Kailua. about 20 miles away. Signal was weak because the Koolau (Ko-o-lau) mountains blocked the land path across Oahu. KLEI, unfortunately, is now long gone.

TENTATIVE New one for me this morning just after 4am CDT. Gospel music on 1110 with a very weak signal, but not much on 1110 at my location before dawn to block it. I never did catch an ID, but WGNZ from Fairborn, OH (Dayron) seems to be the only fit. Probably 1kw PSA power (I seriously doubt 2 watts would be audible barefoot around here!) Anyway, I'll try to keep checking for the next two or three days to see if turns up again in identifiable form.

How strange. Having it happen more than once tends to imply that perhaps it's not a fluke. Perhaps comparing it to your other radio will settle this mystery.

I'd check it out myself, but KOIT is pretty strong here, so if KZAP did show up on 96.5, it's virtually certain to be thoroughly drowned out by KOIT.

2 watts would cover a few ears of corn in Xenia. WGNZ is a frequent cheater

LOL!

Update: I was on 1110 again before local sunrise this morning. The religious music was fading in and out. Mostly out. I did catch an ID with a female voice, but it faded before the call letters completely made it through. Audio was weak and "fuzzy", so I can't say for sure, but I'm still leaning toward WGNZ. Conditions were not as good as the previous couple of mornings. No trace of KFAB or WBT. Or anything else.

Little tropo DX yesterday. Nothing spectacular, but at least it's something since E-skip has been absent around here.

I'm back on the Gulf Coast this week. I haven't had much time to DX, but my initial impression is that tropo here isn't as strong it was during my February stay. Which...if in fact true...strikes me as very odd. Case in point is WTIX-FM, which is very weak, if even there at all. During our last visit this past February, WTIX was in with a hiss-free signal more often than not, That also had been the rule in previous summers, when the FM band frequently lit up with New Orleans area signals from a distance of about 130-150 miles to my west.

More Sporadic-E to El Paso, TX here yesterday. Pretty much mostly relogs but picked up some new low band stuff to El Paso.

I think there was a earlier Es opening that i missed yesterday that probably would have given me Amarillo, TX.

Just a report on KZAP

on my Eton Mini I'm getting it on 96.7 not 96.5

I can't even get it on my Sangean DT-110

I'm going to get the XHDATA D-109 from eBay
The radio's local oscillator might be way off.

Do you get other stations way off frequency as well and not on the proper frequency?

Update from the Gulf Coast (Perdido Key on the AL-FL Border).

Interesting DX about two hours before dawn this morning. WTAN 1340 from Clearwater, FL. 312 miles. WTAN totally on top for the better part of a half hour. Oldies and "Tan Network" branding along with positive ID.

As I've posted before, WTAN makes the daytime hop to here via saltwater path. Very weak, but listenable despite splatter from semi-local WEBY on 1330. The signal this morning was obviously skywave across the gulf and definitely stronger than daytime. The gy mess was present underneath, but didn't rise to the top.

Also...We haven't talked much lately about the "wobbler" on 870. I actually thought it might be gone, but at night, it's apparently alive and well, The signal was strong and trashing WWL, which is also strong here 24/7. But the wobbler vanishes by day, leaving WWL in the clear. I could think of no reason why what I've been hearing isn't in line with the prevailing theory of this noisemaker being of Cuban origin.

CADXER, I noticed your FM haul included a bunch of first adjacents to Chicago stations with IBOC, and normally blocked out. Is it more the RS antenna (directional?) you'e using or the Sangean? That's a unit I'm not familiar with. Thanks in advance.

You have to have antennas with really deep nulls and really small side lobes to null out first adjacent IBOC sidebands usually. Most have been discontinued. The k6sti site has some home brew designs that do this. The 5 element Yagi is where you might start. I wish he would also show relative field polar patterns, as the dB scale makes the antennas look less impressive. The Stellar Labs 30-2460 with the fifth element modification looks fairly straightforward, but the front to worst side lobe ratio is modest.
