KROQ Movie Proposal

Here's a story that I somehow missed. Apparently a KROQ DJ had an affair with a member of the band Berlin. Now it's being made into a movie:

Talk about how radio has changed. I can't imagine too many other radio people today having affairs with rock stars. Although I've heard Mary Turner had a few at one time.

Wow.

I have heard her do interviews where she said she liked to perform roles (the ones in described in the song) in the bedroom, but she was consistently disappointed by her stiff boyfriend that would resist and just keep repeating "I'm a man", so she wrote about it in the song.

How uncomfortable must Blade have been to have to play that song all these years.

Just my opinion- I think that DJs and rock stars dated more frequently back in the 60's-80's when the rockers used to come over to the radio stations in person to promote their records, or when, at least in Los Angeles, Top 40 DJ's had rock n' roll dance party tv shows where the musicians performed, or owned dance clubs where bands showed up to play a few songs or a set.
L.A. radio stations needed a lot of live air talent, and the talent often knew the same record producers, agents, and backup musicians as members of rock groups did.
According to the article, Blade met Nunn when she called up his show after he made a comment about her. Then he invited her to a gig he was hosting. These days, there's so little live air talent ( and listeners want music, not live DJ chatter), so I agree with you when you say that today, there's less dating between DJ's and rock stars. This is off-topic, but speaking of KROQ, they used to have a big music festival every year, called the KROQ Wienie Roast, in Irvine, the town where I lived. It was started in the early 90's roughly around the time that Coachella started. The air talent used to drop by to help introduce the acts or to hang out with the bands.

What you describe may have happened occasionally in LA and, maybe one or two other big cities. But I am having a hard time thinking of case of an air talent dating an artist in any format that I have been involved with.

In Buenos Aires, at Mega 98.3 we were live 24/7 with 10 air talents including overnight and weekends and fills. All the artists were local, and there were lots of them. Never saw "couples" forming. In an AC, a CHR, a dance, and two Salsa station in Puerto RicoI never saw that, and again many if not most of the artists were local.

In LA with KLVE and KSCA and KRCD, never saw a talent and an artist as a couple... and for a while those first two stations were #1 and #2 in the market and we had to set rules so that too many artists did not visit either station.

Closest I ever came was a lunch with the singer from the garage band we used at remotes in Miami at a Spanish CHR... a cute girl named Gloria Estefan.

She was already married, right?
Not then. She met Emilio when he asked her to join his garage band, Miami Sound Machine.

Didn't you, or a producer you knew, or someone from one of your radio stations advise Gloria to change her sound, or her material, or re-invent herself, so that she became a superstar? I could be wrong, but weren't you awhile back telling an anecdote where either you or someone you knew helped launch her work with the Miami Sound Machine? I think they used to be known as the Miami Latin Boys. ( Or, I could have this story completely wrong). --- Daryl

Here's the latest radio affair scandal: C.C.s Prophet automation system has been seen carrying on with the new kid on the block, RadioGPT.

Emilio Estefan is a very bright guy and he knows music and the business. He realized that Gloria was bigger than his band. After a string of Spanish language hits, and at a time when stations in Miami like Y-100 were pretty rhythmic and tried to appeal to the Cuban-American audience, he got some English language material and it worked at Y-100 and spread nationally.

But the first MSM hits were in Spanish... but very much the style of the songs they did in English.

"Dated" per se, most likely not as often as you're thinking. Occasional hookups during or after events, especially when alcohol or other substances were involved, most probably. Artists and musicians sleeping with DJs, and others in "the business" in an effort to get their stuff played, most definitely.

Reading more about this story, the movie will actually be based on the book by the DJ, not the rock star. So this is from the radio point of view. At the time, Berlin was a struggling LA band that released a song called "Sex" that was based on Terri Nunn's relationship with Blade. The year was 1982, and KROQ was primarily a new wave/rock station, playing Talking Heads, The Police, The Cars, and Pet Shop Boys. Ratings-wise, they were doing pretty well. Nunn was advised by her label to break off the relationship, and wrote a song about it. Berlin was on Geffen Records at the time, and one year later, they had a monster hit with Take My Breath Away, a song that appeared in the soundtrack to the Tom Cruise movie Top Gun. So there's the context.

Coachella didn't start till October of 1999
