KNZR 1560 Bakersfield, CA Goes Spanish

KNZR-AM 1560 Bakersfield, CA To Flip Formats To Spanish Talk
Conservative Spanish-Language Talk On Tap For KNZR-A/Bakersfield

Back when i was in Wyoming, i could hear this as late as 1030/11am in and as early as 3pm in winter. And every once in awhile, it and KNX would be audible all day.. mind you at 12, 1pm.. it'd be barely above the noise floor, but i could tell it was there.

I'm not surprised, as most of the English audience is probably on 97.7. Best wishes for this format. I'm surprised I haven't seen this in a lot of Texas markets as they are increasingly going Republican (illegal immigration is a hot topic down there). There were several border counties (eight) that flipped to Trump in 2020, and a few more had Biden win by just a few percent.

Problem is, as someone clued me into, Americano Media is based out of Miami and very Cuban centric.

It'll go over as well as a lead and sh&t filled balloon in the sky

The problem here is that Hispanics who vote are mostly going to be English dominant. And the political interests are generally purely local and not national. Those who listen to talk radio in Spanish generally look for social issue topics that help adapt to a new country, not politics.

Isn't that what the Chinese have been sending over your part of the world?

Someone clued you wrong.

It is based in Miami, but the CEO of Americano Media, Ivan Garcia-Hidalgo (a GOP political operative for 30 years), is thinking big---he wants to be the go-to news/talk network for conservative Latinos, and to change hearts, minds and votes by highlighting the issues that Latinos tend to be more conservative about:

Their star lineup includes Dania Alexandrino, who has reported for Univision and CNN en Espanol. There's also Freddy Silva, a veteran of Univision and Telemundo. And Jesus Marquez, a politician turned conservative media pundit.

Dania's heritage is Puerto Rican, Freddy's is Bolivian and Jesus' is Mexican. Lourdes Ubieta and Nelson Rubio are of Cuban descent, but Lucia Navarro is from Mexico, and Carines Moncada was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela.

If you're thinking "Latinos don't vote Republican", think again:

And if you're thinking "Maybe in some places, but not California"...think again again:

Garcia-Hidalgo is VERY serious about this. Will it work? That's an open question, but it's not the obvious misfire from the start that people think it is.

Case in point! Like I said, 8 Texas counties mostly along the border flipped to Trump in 2020. Some had voted Democratic for 50+ years. They are voting towards conservative politics mostly because of the illegal immigration issues. Hispanic farmers along the TX border, whom most are legal immigrants, are NOT happy about the jump in illegal border crossings. Not only that, but because they lean Catholic religiously which for the most part is against abortion. The Cuban-American population is also starting to back Republicans at times (see DeSantis' win in Miami-Dade County last November, a county that has 65% Hispanic population, mostly Cuban-Americans).
Some may not want Trump in 2024, however. I wonder how WAXY-790 is doing in ratings and in overall publicity down in Miami.

They are not immigrants, legal or not. Most are from families that have been in what is now South Texas since the 1800's.
are NOT happy about the jump in illegal border crossings.
And that is because the illegal migrants are camping out on their land, destroying or eating their crops and cattle and stealing anything they can find.
Not only that, but because they lean Catholic religiously which for the most part is against abortion.
That is really not as strong an issue as thought by outsiders. The general opinion is "let each group have their own opinion".
The Cuban-American population is also starting to back Republicans at times (see DeSantis' win in Miami-Dade County last November, a county that has 65% Hispanic population, mostly Cuban-Americans).
They have always backed republicans, back to the 1960s. They felt JFK let them down by not supporting the Bay of Pigs invasion and feel that later Democrats are "pro-communist".

In younger demos, only about half of the Miami Hispanic population is Cuban or Cuban American. Huge groups of Venezuelans, Colombians, Puerto Ricans and others are now in Dade and Broward.

(I have programmed, managed, or consulted Spanish language stations in Miami going back to 1970)

There are now 6 or 7 (7 if you count the talk content on the religious station) talkers in Spanish in Miami. Every one, so far, is conservative and anti-Castro. Even the music stations are very conservative in their personality morning shows.

WAXY has an 0.2 in the May book.

WAXY has an 0.2 in the May book.
Spanish talk stations that actually get ratings (although 5 did not make the most recent book) include
WAQI 1.7 22nd
WURN 0.9 25th
WWFE 0.5 27th
WAXY 0.3 31st
WSUA 0.2 33rd (tie)
WNYM 0.0 47th
WQBA 0.1 47th
WRHC 0.0
WACC 0.0
WOIR 0.0
WKAT 0.0

There are also 5 or 6 Kreyol stations in the market, and about a dozen Kreyol FM pirates-

Surprised, but not surprised. It will make 1560 more Spanish at night here in the Seattle region. KVAN's religion from the Tri-Cities, and now Spanish talk on KNZR. I can't remember hearing any other stations on that channel recently. Even the local KZIZ is off the air, or maybe running one watt or something during the day because I never hear it anymore.

Are their age and gender demographics similar to English language talk stations? (i.e: heavily male and older skewing)
It depends on the station. In Miami, the listeners to the main Spanish talk stations are ultra-conservative and over 65 and mostly male. The Miami issue is that the talk programming is driven by exile groups... most dealing with the Cuban exile community and one dealing with Colombian exiles. Exiles, of course, wish they could return home and are "only in the US" until the government changes. The Colombians mostly left due to rebel violence with extreme socialist ideas.

Elsewhere, the few intents that have been at all successful were more than 20 years ago, were not politically based. Those stations were focused on social issues, and had personality morning shows and also did a good amount of sports. They got about 60/40 Male to Female ratios.

One, KTNQ in LA, in the 1996 to 1999 did beat KFI in 25-54 a number of times. We stayed far away from politics as most listeners could not vote here and we focused on social issues, sports and a fun morning show.

Here is a collection of articles and photos of my work at KTNQ:

And that is me in the middle with Rafael Zigler on the left and Amalia Gonzalez on the right.

The host of the video from MSNBC that this article captioned as "Fox news in Spanish", makes an incredibly ignorant statement. But before I get to that, the Axios title shown: "Texas Mall Shooter Among Growing Number of Hispanic White Supremacists", is unfortunately a true statement. Where the issue is, MSNBC's Katie Phang, while introducing a guest on her show, apparently labels all "Hispanics" as non-white. Talk about "mis-information". She seems incredulous that anyone with a Spanish last name could possibly be a "White-supremist".

Ms. Phang is presumably a college graduate, so where does this ignorance come from ? The people from a well known European country called Spain are certainly White and because of the language used could also be referred to as Hispanic or Latino. The same is true of some other countries, notably Argentina where the large majority of the population is of European backgrpound.

Yes I realize that "Black, White, Asian, etc" are largely social constructs, intended to label, describe or separate groups of people from one another. But "Hispanic" is NOT an ethnicity, race, or national group, it is at best a "language and/or cultural origin or heritage". Hispanics are found among virtually all "ethnic" or "racial" groups.

Yes I know this probably belongs on another thread, but some things just have to be said...

Very well stated. There is a reason why the Y/N "Are you Hispanic..." question on the U.S. Census is a separate item from "What is your race?" question.

Heck, one of the past presidents of Perú was both Hispanic and Asian. There was an Argentine president who was of Lebanese heritage and Hispanic as well. I could go on and on, but some people don't understand that "Hispanic" is an American OMB / Census construct made to conform with a slew of 70's legislation that required enumeration.

The definition of Hispanic has changed slightly in every Census since 1980. By at least one of the, I am Hispanic, too.

As you might remember from another thread, I have a friend that has a T-shirt that says: I'm Mexican, NOT Hispanic!"

And one of my daughters has one that says,

I am not Latina
I am not Hispanic
I am Puerto Rican

I guess it will make anything in English something to listen further - it WILL be long-range DX :)
KLNG Council Bluffs IA may be possible early in the morning at Omaha sunrise. Christian talk and teaching.

Meanwhile, based on Tomas' post, that's why I avoid a lot of national news nowadays. Whether MSNBC on the left or Fox on the right, it has leaned towards political opinion for years, and not THE NEWS. They want a reaction from the audience instead of informing. If I want to hear someone's opinion about the issue, I'd go to a Sunday morning political show, a conservative radio program, or something like Thom Hartmann for a liberal opinion. How we wish for the days of Uncle Walter, "and that's the way it is".

Anyways, back to the original topic at hand.
