Cuts at New Jersey 101.5

This is a station that's sort of stuck in a time warp. Everybody is cutting staff, regardless of platform. This station is just one more.

The way the release is worded, it sounds like management felt the three men being let go weren't able or willing to adjust to multimedia (on air and online) journalism and entertainment. I'd be curious to know how old they are and how old the person making the decision is. Ageism could be at work here, but I'm not sure a lawsuit would get anywhere.

If your job is eliminated, it doesn't matter how old you are.
But the station is going to replace them. Evenings will still be live, but the responsibilities of the people staffing that shift will include internet stuff. Read the release. Pick the right court and the right judge or jury and they could get a positive result. That's what Townsquare should be fearing. I smell a potential big settlement to make the issue go away.

I did. He says it's a different job:

Our plan for the NJ101.5 newsroom is to add multi-media journalists that excel both online and on-air, and we are currently recruiting for those roles.

So their broadcast-only jobs were eliminated. The decision was based on function, not age.

Indeed, there are ways around the age issue, and this wording covers that, regardless of what someone's unstated intentions were. The journalist jobs at the least are being reworked into something new, so the old ones went away, and so did the occupants. They may well change the hosting situation as well--redefining the role into something that may happen to include that shift.

All of that said, the fact that the talking fossil on the midday show is still around undercuts the idea this is all about age.
