Hot and Mega

I know very little about the NYC market. But, I just joined threads and I’m surprised no one has mentioned the rumored merger between the company who owns hot 97.1 and mega (?)

Would that mean Hot 97 is going away as is BLS?
No, it means there is a rumor that the owners of Mega, SBS, are buying Hot and WBLS to add to their cluster in New York City.

There is also a rumor that this is a "three way" with WBLS then being sold to Urban One. That rumor comes from the fact that SBS has no experience with pure Urban stations, and the other fact that Hot has a predominantly Hispanic core audience as it is Churban, not pure Urban.

Would it make sense for Urban One to own only one station in a major market?

They currently own two stations in Dallas and two in Philadelphia.

If this were to happen, then Mediaco (formerly Emmis) would only own one station in NY: WEPN, which it LMAs to Good Karma.

Yes. Ethnic broadcasters can exist with one or two stations as the sell what is often bought as a “separate” market.

Hot is a staple as is BLS. I hope none of them flip. 😕
Nobody is suggesting format flips for two “top ten” high billing stations.

If true I think SBS could pull off what they tried to do and failed with DJ 106.7 in Miami. Legacy isn't worth much in radio nowadays but Hot has it.

I wonder if Alex Sensation would start doing hip-hop mixes for English-speaking New Yorkers in addition to his popular Mix on Mega.

We’re more than 24 hours in. How has everyone not heard of Threads yet?!
I think you missed the irony in that the original source was me...
Does anyone have links to facts, or is it just more rumor & gossip?
When I post a rumor, just like most similarly credible sports reporters, it comes from substantial sources. Just because it hasn't been announced yet doesn't mean there's not enough talk about it in circles who know what is coming.
Or a very good source who wants this leaked. In my years of covering sports, there were a lot of “leaks” that got out to give coaches more money or athletes more playing time
Nobody "wants this leaked". In fact I've already heard from people who are pissed at me that it did. My job as a reporter is to track down credible leads and this is one (as @DavidEduardo has also heard) has been discussed for awhile. I simply used it yesterday as bait to get people to follow my brand on a new platform, but that doesn't mean its any less credible.

And as we know, this kind of big station / big market rumor can take on a life of its own. One source says Big Buyer is looking at WAAA and then it gets turned into “purchasing” instead of “looking”. We end up with a variant of the party game where each person tells something to he next, and then the next… ending up with a totally different statement after eight or them people try to repeat it.

Which is why I've been sitting on this for weeks now and digging to ensure what is true. I stand by everything I report to the point that there is excessive likelihood of this happening. To the point I know one of the clusters is beginning a relocation to temporary facilities shortly before both move to a new location big enough to fit everyone in next year.

So, perhaps current owner Mediaco Holding was set up with the intention of selling WQHT and WBLS, and then dissolving?
