Central Valley News: KVIN 920 ends oldies format

Well, "goes silent" is not quite right. Maybe it's off the air for a short time during the hand-off. But the station has been sold to a South Asian broadcaster, Punjabi American Media. Here's the story from Inside Radio...

>>>Modesto, CA –Punjabi American Media has closed an $800,000 deal to buy oldies KVIN (920) from Threshold Communications. The deal also includes the Modesto, CA-licensed translators K222BX (92.3) and K296HL (107.1). Punjabi American Media owns other stations in the Central Valley, but KVIN is its first in the Modesto market.<<<

I got a tour of KVIN's studio facilities back around 2015, the owners were very nice, as well as the receptionist.
They had a nice setup.

I lived not far up the hill in the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the way to Yosemite at the time and often passed near the nighttime transmitter site 920 had when my wife & I headed down to Modesto.
The daytime site was west of Modesto & the nighttime site east of Modesto. Each site had 3 in-line towers, 500 watts day & 2500 watts night.
KVIN is licensed for Ceres, CA (just southeast of Modesto).

If I recall correctly, the studio facility also housed the FM they owned, KRVR which was licensed to Copperopolis,CA (aways northeast of Modesto).
I believe they still own the FM.

Two of the best guys in the business, bar none.

Their Threshold Communications still owns KRVR (105.5 FM) operating out of the same building on Emerald in Modesto.

I first discovered KVIN while driving up I-5 from LA back in 2017, and listened to it off and on in the years since.

When I tuned in earlier this year and heard that Punjabi stuff instead of oldies, I got very sad.

At least I still have KYNO, which signed on fairly recently (mid 2021, I think?)
