Peter Nero, Instrumental Pianist

In the days when Beautiful Music ruled the airwaves, one of the artists who got airplay was Peter Nero. He would take popular songs and arrange them for piano & strings. In this obit, he says he wasn't offended when people called it "middle of the road." He went on to lead the Philadelphia Pops orchestra. His biggest hit was probably the theme from the movie "The Summer of '42."

Being Classically trained, his recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue' is notable.

Funny.....Michel LeGrand did the song on the actual movie soundtrack.....but Nero's version became the "go-to" on radio stations around the country.....
Even funnier....listening to WABC (then "Music Radio 77"), hearing this song.....then....out of a quick jingle.....BANG!
Rod Stewart's "Maggie May"!!!
Driving home at midnight after my air shift at WHEB...and nearly getting lulled to sleep by Nero......Rod sure jolted me awake!!!

Just for comparison

I like the violins but overall Nero's is better. No, I don't know why everything is bold.
