Another piece in the KPNW puzzle

I was rather hoping that Hubbard would do some talent poaching from KEXP.

KPNW/Seattle Taps Area Vet Marco Collins For Afternoons

HUBBARD BROADCASTING Triple A KPNW/SEATTLE is adding ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAMER MARCO COLLINS to its on-air lineup weekdays from 3p to7p, starting MAY 1st.

COLLINS is a SEATTLE mainstay having served as MD/On-Air Host at AUDACY Alternative KNDD (107.7 THE END)/SEATTLE during SEATTLE’s grunge era. His role breaking artists such as NIRVANA, BECK, WEEZER, FOO FIGHTERS, and GARBAGE helped land him a place in the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME and subject of the 2015 documentary THE GLAMOUR & THE SQUALOR. COLLINS most recently served on-air at FRIENDS OF KEXP Triple A KEXP/SEATTLE from 2009 until his departure in mid-APRIL.

Seattle Times had a article today, behind a paywall. Has some good bites from Collins about the stations.

It’s basically going to be me winging it just like I did at KEXP,” Collins said a few days before his first shift.

As much as he enjoyed his run at KEXP, calling it “the kind of job you don’t walk away from,” being part of building a station was an alluring opportunity that doesn’t come often. His new drive-time slot is also a higher-profile gig than the nights and weekend shifts Collins frequently anchored at KEXP.

Collins described KPNW’s sound as leaning in a “AAA direction” — Triple-A meaning adult album alternative, industry parlance for a mix of adult contemporary and alternative rock — hoping to appeal to 107.7 The End listeners and fans who remember 103.7 The Mountain, the late adult alternative station that ended its 20-year run a decade ago.

It’s a work in progress,” Collins said of KPNW’s current mix. “We’re figuring out where our pocket is. … I feel like we’re kind of inventing a new format.”"

It's a wonderful conversation if the goal is to make Marco happy. That only works if Marco can bring in a lot of followers, in the social media usage of the word. And then, can Hubbard sell that audience to sponsors. If it works, you may see more of these stations in big cities because that are a lot of Marcos out there waiting for their phone to ring, hoping to get paid for playing their favorite music. There are a lot of people in San Francisco who might like such a station.

Yes on Sundays. Seems like the personalities are helping the station slowly get its ratings up. Now it has a 0.9 share in the May 2023 ratings period.

Been listening to KPNW from time to time over the past couple of weeks. Interesting music mix. Variety of sources, most of them stereo, some full-on mono, some sound like MP2/MP3, and compressed. But the music is interesting. Hearing a few spots, so the station must be making some money if it's got spots, right? Hopefully.

Not necessarily. They don't have three months of ratings on which to base a price yet.

They might give advertisers an advance discount price that could last for a year.

Understood.

That's why I said "hopefully", knowing that the financials of radio aren't my strong suit. ;-)

So would the spots be making Hubbard any money from being run? How does something like this work out, when a station is new?

really not very big news….just another PR move from Hubbard. The station is going to have to do a lot more than add a personality on Saturday. Look what happened to the Mountain and all of their great talent. The 98.9 frequency has been a hodge podge for years. The only question I have is now that the newness of 98.9 is beginning to wear off, how long will it be before Hubbard flips again? Ya think they might be missing Country about now?

No because Country is just Farm-emo.

It costs a ton of money to change formats, so most operations don't do so without careful consideration and research.
