Crystal Lake, IL....

Days: Splatter from local flamethrower WBBM (780)

Nights: Lots of talk last week about XEABC on 760. So, lets go up one notch and talk about WABC. Here northwest of Chicago, WABC is usually strong enough to break through the WBBM slop with a fair-good signal.

Other kication/retro: During my college days in the late '60s in southeast Iowa, WABC had a loyal following. We had a fair share of East coast kids in the dorm who dealt with their culture shock of being in Iowa by getting a nightly dose of Cousin Brucie and Ron Lundy (sp?). Signal was surprisingly good, and being in WBBM's cancellation zone helped matters.

As a one-time Burqueño ("Albuquerquean"), I've been waiting for this one!

But, first, present circumstances (Oakland, CA):
Daytime - KCBC from Manteca, CA
Nighttime - KCBC.

It seems that the Pt. Reyes SDR gets KCBC better than I do. Not sure why.

If KCBC weren't around, I think there would be a good chance in Oakland of getting KKOB Albuquerque at night. It absolutely slams into Paso Robles, CA, roughly 200 miles south of here.

Historical circumstances (this time, Columbia, MO):
Usually WABC dominated but it wasn't all that strong. Of course, daytimes on 770 were occupied by a faint signal from St. Louis's WEW. But I'd often try to get KOB (as it then was) during critical hours. I have some notes from my time in mid-Missouri. Also during critical hours, I once received either KUOM or WCAL from Minneapolis. This was in 1980. Also in 1980, one late night brought Radio Fabulosa de Guatemala to the 770 spot. In 1984, my notes indicated that KOB came in at night with a "strong" signal from time to time.

The really weird thing, though, was that, often heard on 770 in mid-Missouri, was KJCS in Lafayette, LA. 500 watts nighttime; 1 kw daytime. But I wonder if sometimes they "forgot" about switching over. I since find that the FCC deleted KJCS's license in 2020 after an STA to remain silent expired in 2019. The FCC letter cancelling the license indicates that the station's owner had died.

Nothing but KCBC here.

An interesting note is that it seems to be the only semi local AM to be broadcasting in HD.

770 WABC - New York - 77-WABC - News, talk - ABC 2023 - most commonly heard

770 CMBA - V.C. Central, Cuba - Radio Rebelde - Cadena Nacional - 2016

770 HJJX - Bogota, Colombia - RCN - Spanish – Noticias - 1991

kw - Melbourne FL

Wilmington Delaware

Days - Good signal from WABC

Nights - Still a good signal from WABC but there is a lot of fading similar to the other NYC ND 50 KW stations (WFAN and WCBS).

Retro - Lots of great memories listening to WABC growing up in West Chester PA in the 70's when it was the #1 rated station in the country playing Top 40. Cousin Brucie, and Dan Ingram are the DJ's I remember playing the Eagles, Captain and Tennille, Bee Gees, etc. Now it is just a right wing talking box that I never listen to.

WABC was a regular nighttime listen for me In the 60s. Cousin Brucie and Bob Lewis were fun listening and Scott Muni. Today I don’t listen much but WABC still comes in well most nights. Other stations heard include St Louis, Minnesota both pre sunrise. I heard KOB once or twice years ago.

When I had my Top 40 station in Quito, Ecuador, in the mid and later 60's, on many nights I'd wait for the Bogotá station on 770 to sign off at midnight and, if reception was good, listen to WABC on my station's communications receiver, an HQ-180 from Hammarlund. Even though I could not hear the star DJs, even overnights was fun to listen to... I even had the same jingle packages as WABC and that made it even more exciting to hear.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

Days, zippo.

Nights, regularly: WABC New York. With my original radios (from Radio Shack), this would be a tremendous DX catch. Now it's easy, as I'm far enough from WBBM to usually null out most, sometimes all of NewsRadio 78's hash. (It was impossible when WBBM ran IBOC.)

Early one 2019 morning on sign-on: WEW St. Louis.

Two bonus catches with day transmitters on at night: KATL Miles City, Mont. (10 kW), WVNN Athens, Ala. (7 kW).

Forgot to mention location was/is near north Chicago suburbs

In Pickerington, Ohio, a weak WAIS daytime licensed to Buchtel, Ohio ... but situated right on the edge of Nelsonville, about 55 miles southeast of me. 1,000 watts make it up here decently well even with some of the poorer ground conductivity between here and there. The tower is easily visible from U.S. 33 right outside town. That was even more so the case before the 33 bypass. You drove right by the station and the tower.
At night, WABC moderate to strong.

East Tennessee: Days---splatter from 760 WETR. Nights, normally WABC. Sometimes a hodge-podge of signals

Retro/other: Dayton, OH area Days: WAIS, Buchtel, OH days, WABC night. Further north in West Central, OH, I had caught WEW a time or two around sunset. In the winter, I could get Dan Ingram starting around 4pm , then Cousin Brucie, Chuck Leonard, etc. WABC usually faded by 7am

Regarding KKOB - its synchronous transmitter, in use only at night, in Santa Fe is still active. It's on the KVSF tower west of the Plaza and St. Francis Drive. I was in Santa Fe a couple of months ago, and found that KKOB actually has a better signal there at night compared to the daytime.

A nighttime drive along I-25 between Albuquerque and Santa Fe might produce interesting results!

WEW has a CP to change to class B status, 10,000 watts daytime, 200 watts night, DA-2. Hard to tell when that will get built, though; the CP's been refiled once.
