Tropospheric ducting

I have been going to Houston and driving to Louisiana every week since July. Every time I have noticed that there’s tropo in the night. And not the weak tropo either, it’s strong. 300 mile tropo is common. Stations 150 miles away are solid in HD. Some locals get wiped out by tropo.

I lived in NJ where tropo would be a nightly occurrence in the summer, but not usually strong like I noticed in Texas. 300 mile tropo was rare in NJ but seemingly common in Texas

Some of my best tropo catches, all caught while driving

KBPA Austin 103.5 Bob FM near Slidell, LA
K223CW 92.5 Houston near Jennings, LA (only “28 watts”)
KTHT 97.1 Cleveland in HD near Gulfport, MS
KISS 99.5 San Antonio in HD right over a local in Lake Charles
KNIN 92.9 Wichita Falls near Beaumont
XHAAA 93.1 Reynosa near Lake Charles
WXYK Pascagoula 105.9 The Monkey near Baytown

KISS and KSMG San Antonio have very strong HD during tropos. I actually got KISS HD in Baton Rouge. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Wichita Falls though.
San Antonio and Austin have been blasting into Tyler like crazy this summer. You know it's stronger than usual when KROX wipes out KNUE in Tyler. KNUE's signal is no slouch. That happened just yesterday morning. Thought there was a problem, and it was knocked off the air, but no. KWTX has been wreaking havoc on KTBB-FM every morning this week, and I heard from my buddy up in Mineola that WACO 100 has been heard in the monitors at K Moo.

I blame it on El Niño.

Texas seems to have a great advantage from tropo. About 15 years ago I picked up a Tejano station from San Diego, CA. Unfortunately, I didn't get it long enough to get a proper ID, but I heard a sweeper in English saying something about the station being "Your Tejano Station" or "Tejano hits" or something like that. It had bad fading and I heard a little music and that sweeper. I don't recall the frequency but going over highway 52 at the summit, I used to like to dial in 96.1 (the old KSIQ, Brawley) or 98.3 from Mexicali for the 30 seconds or so that I could hear them as I went down the hill into East County from the summit, so it was possible that it was on one of those frequencies.

There has never been a Tejano station in California, and, except for a couple of Selena cuts, very few Tejano songs have ever made the playlist of any Spanish language station in the state.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I picked up a Tejano station, presumably from Texas, FROM San Diego, CA

It's pretty active tonight. Deep within 100kw KYBG Basile/Lafayette's 60 dBu contour, I'm getting KYBG (not broadcasting in HD) perfectly on analog and the HD indicator lights up then KMJQ immediately covers it up and doesn't even drop when driving around. Had to turn HD off to listen in the car.

Lots of other Houston visitors tonight including KRBE, Legends, and KHPT (the latter are frequent visitors) in Acadiana and Central Louisiana.

I can currently hear KYBG in certain spots here. I’m also hearing WTIX with RDS and Big 93.9 from Corpus. Lake Charles/Beaumont is really strong. Also getting some of my common Alexandria catches

Last night I did get KRVS HD over KUHF HD
