After an extended search, KIRO Newsradio, 97.3 FM, has officially announced the addition of two new shows to its weekday lineup.

  • Jack Stine and Spike O’Neill will permanently host the noon-3 p.m. time slot. “The Jack and Spike Show” starts Monday, August 14.
  • Jake Skorheim will host “KIRO Nights” starting today, Monday, August 7.

The noon-3pm show is unlistable to me. Maybe it's just me, or not if you look at the ratings.
 
I’m pretty surprised by this news. I thought for sure they would try to find someone who would carry (on at least part of) the legacy that Dori left behind. I’m happy to see that Jake is getting a much deserved opportunity though.

It looked like KIRO’s showing was a little weak in the recent 6+ update. Maybe they’ll regain a little momentum as we head into fall with the start of the Seahawk’s season.

It's pretty common for talk stations to run lower in the summer when people are on vacation or doing other things. By the time traditional PNW-pissing rain begins in a couple of months, more folks will be stuck in their cars on I-5 and 405 listening to the radio.
 
Jack Stine is talented. KIRO Nights SUX!! Spike is a DJ nothing more, nothing less....he is horrible at the talk show host gig. Jake should be a HUGE improvement
 
I was not a Dori fan as he drifted from a moderate host into something else over the years, but like fordranger797, I'm surprised KIRO/Bonneville didn't go with another partisan firebrand for the mid-day time slot. What I've heard of the Jack and Spike show has been fine, but it's not usually enough to keep my attention past the ad breaks.
 
I suppose nothing much has changed with KIRO. The only real difference is that a more conservative-friendly voice will be heard during KIRO nights while 12-3 will be more to the left. I don’t know if this is ultimately the right formula, but time will tell. There were many loyal listeners of the 12-3pm slot who probably wont return during those listening hours. Perhaps KIRO gains them back at 3pm. Those of us who don’t see the specific breakdowns of the monthly PPM will never know unless someone is nice enough to inform us.
 
Looks like they are hiring for a reporter and fill in hosts at KIRO. Also looks like they are hiring for a Chief Engineer. Ford seems like you’d be a good fit for that role. More tech sided stuff.

That’s a job I would absolutely love but not be qualified to do at the same time. You never know though… maybe someday!
 
If anything, KIRO strikes me as a culturally conservative radio station. Since Tagney retired, there's no unapologetic liberals on that station in a key talk show host capacity. So what these announcements amount to is that they hired two slightly younger white guys who are conservatives, and one left leaning older white guy who's apologetic and "both sides ism" about his "liberal" beliefs.

It would have made more sense to pair O'Neill and Skorheim - creating a bond for the Dori audience who still had hope in that time slot, while balancing the ideological lean. Stine's obviously book smart, but sometimes can be perceived as condescending, and doesn't leave O'Neill enough room to develop a serious thought, because he tends to overpower the show and make it about himself.

Don't forget that KIRO's license is owned by the Mormon Church. While I find Dave Ross and crew on weekday mornings to be a delight and a class act, I don't expect anything else on the station to reflect the interests or needs or the majority of Seattleites.

That may be true in Seattle, but it doesn’t always translate when you leave the city limits. There’s more to the puget sound area than Seattle. KIRO has a strong following among suburban residents.

I believe the Chief's gig has already been filled.
 
Traffic gets bad on the Interstate all the time around here… so they will probably be listening to the radio even longer if there is rain.
