A Few Houston Radio Notes

Is it OK if we talk about the KFI situation on the Los Angeles board? Can I copy your text here and paste it over there? Thanks!
If you find it useful, sure. My example was based on taking the lowest 1-A (former) clear channel's primary station and showing that even it had noisy areas inside its primary coverage zone.

I figured I would post about my personal observations of some sketchy Houston translators for anyone who's interested in it. Any claims of being overpowered are just assumptions since I can not measure strength so don't argue about that.

What is going on with KFNC? Two of the afternoon hosts have quit and a third got canned. The station is rerunning show “highlights” from earlier in the day in the 3 to 6pm slot.

Getting the impression things are circling down the drain at 97.5. Would not shock me if news breaks that the station is being sold, especially with national religious broadcasters sniffing around for new acquisitions.

With the delisting of K223CW from the ratings, I’d think that the advertising budget would shrink. They’re going to have to either simulcast it 100%, or turn on the HD exciter at 97.5 (and pay Xperi)

They never had high enough ratings to get on ad buys based on numbers.

Be cautious with these types of accusations. They could get you into legal trouble unless you are able to show absolute proof of these statements.
While power levels and directionality on some “too good to be true” signals might be up for debate, the lack of originating stations for certain translators is irrefutable. Some operators here claim originating stations that simply don’t exist.

Also when I hear LPFMs running commercials, then that is something that can’t be denied, either.

I agree. Some of these fact are undebatable. Accusing someone of being over-power without documented proof is the issue.

The word "allegedly" clears up any libel/slander.

I did say they were assumptions so it is allegedly. Everything is my own personal observations.

They allegedly are overpowered but not as much as the other ones. They do have an originating station and are licensed to be nondirectional. Normal atmospheric conditions don’t make them come up to Conroe to interfere with KZCC-LP like 104.5 does with KZCW-LP

What harm could it do for someone to accuse a translator of running overpower if they really aren’t? If they’re compliant and an FCC inspector sees that, they’ll be fine. But if the FCC inspector sees that they’re running 2000 watts when they should be running 28, that’s a problem.

Every single translator you mentioned is in full compliance with all FCC regulations. If any adverse actions happen to any of our stations you will be held liable.
Ok. Tell me what the originating stations are for 92.5, 94.1, 99.5, 102.5, and 105.3 are...

If you ran a business and were falsely accused of running it illegally, would you be happy about it? Would your potential clients think twice about doing business with you? That's the harm it could do.

I would agree with those who say the claims that some of those translators are operating completely legally sound dubious at best, but people need to be careful with what they're throwing around. "It just looks that way" isn't good enough.
