104.5 LEGAL?

Heard today the 104.5FM Translator on 880AM guess we finally have a legal translator? or not? Using a AM makes me wonder if anyone sees the FCC eventually. allowing AM'S to have sub channels and using those to feed translators.

880 has been a merry-go-round of different Spanish language formats, so who knows what’s going on. I did hear them simulcasting La Grande 104.5 at a check a few minutes ago. KJOZ had previously been running the La Mejor format also heard on KJFI 102.5.

AM band stations using a pure digital signal can run two program streams, as has been done in tests with WWFD in the Washington, D.C. market. I suppose you could feed two translators with that setup, but if the mediumwave signal is already HD, there might not be a point in doing so.

Sure there would - very few consumers have an AM HD tuner, especially outside the car.

I have a couple of receivers that work on MW-HD, but nobody in Phoenix is doing digital-only, so I'm just speculating.

If two MW (not "Ancient Modulation") digital feeds can work to feed two FM translators, it makes a lot of sense to do so if it can be done. Why else would anyone bother with MW-digital?

I guess I was thinking that a pure digital mediumwave station that exists solely to feed translators is kind of silly...might as well feed the translator directly. Supports the argument for allowing AM stations to make their FM translators the primary signal and shutting off the irrelevant AM transmitter.

I’m pretty sure the vast majority of current HD radios are not able to pick up an HD2 on AM. So the FCC isn’t allowing it outside of tests. Apparently WTLC got rejected to go all digital because of their plans to have a HD2.

The DC test was not satisfactory and, I am told, the conclusion is that trying to fit two elephants into a Volkswagen just does not work well.

And, as HTX points out, most HD radios don't behave with an AM HD2.

K283CH-FM has been operating in full compliance with all FCC regulations.
There is no filing, no approved field strength reading and no verification that you are qualified to certify compliance. Closing this thread. If there is verifiable data, a new thread can be opened.

Anyone believing a station is not operating legally may file with the FCC, and then cite the filing here. Otherwise, this is hearsay and will be deleted.
