After an incredible 51-year career behind the mic for Baffalo's NHL team ending with the 2021-22 season, Rick passed away on August 17, shortly after his 81st birthday. What a run!
I'm a bit surprised that there's been no mention here of the passing of Rick Jeanneret. Buffalo Sabres fans have been blessed to have games called by two Foster Hewitt award winners, along with a couple of other winners as color commentators. RJ's Sabres career calling radio and TV games spanned 51 years, a heck of a run. He added TV duties to his radio calls a few years after Ted Darling had to retire due to Pick's Disease. Rick made every game an event in good times and bad. His reel of classic calls is lengthy and legendary. Both local media and fans continue to pay tribute to his legacy.
It doesn't show up in Buffalo-Rochester. I guess it got moved to "In Memoriam" or was originally posted there. Since it's been a very hot topic in WNY and Southern Ontario broadcasting it seems to me that it ought to get a lot more notice in this group. If the moderators moved it they may not have a good grasp on how big of a deal it is in this area, or how much of an impact he (and Ted Darling) had on hockey play by play in general.
