Hurricane Hillary coverage on kfi

I think even Andy (who was News Director at both KNX and KFWB) would agree that KFI is a talk station with a small-ish news department that hits well above its weight. But there are limits to what they can do, and even in its Audacy-weakened state, KNX is better equipped to go to lengthy (measured in days) special coverage.
I've been listening tonight in Oakland to KNX ... sounds like they're doing exactly what they should be doing. They're also not picking up CBS hourly news, which allows them t+o continue wall-to-wall coverage.

KOGO was live and local all night because the hurricane/tropical storm is hitting San Diego first -- several hours before it reaches Los Angeles.
Well it’s now Sunday overnight and KOGO is still live and local all night talking about the storm with Lou Penrose on right now while KFI has gone to national programming with Coast to Coast AM. So if we were following this theory, KFI should be live now and KOGO should be airing Coast to Coast since the storm has already passed San Diego and is now causing more damage up by LA. But it’s the opposite. KFI did good earlier today with Steve Gregory hosting storm coverage for a few hours from 1-4, then Tim Conway Jr. from 4-7 and then Chris Merrill (ironically formerly of KOGO) on from 7-10. Overall, surprisingly, KOGO for the win this weekend with their non-stop 24/7 storm coverage! KNX and KFI also did well.

The thing about storm coverage that's critical is that you stay on the air after it stops raining. There's water uphill in the mountains that's still coming down streams and washes. Earthen dams are still under strain. The first good looks at damage in key areas are becoming possible.

KFI made a choice and it might have been to allow their people to rest before what is likely to be another few days of intensive and difficult coverage.

Also: the listeners have probably mentally checked out at this point. I'm reminded of Harvey where after the first night everyone tuned out the storm coverage because they thought it was overblown. It was the second night where all hell broke loose in Houston.

Yeah, on Facebook yesterday, people in San Diego and L.A. were like "This is nothing"....they're waking up to a different situation this morning.

I didn't think about tuning into KPBS for storm coverage, Does anyone know if they had any? KOGO being the only commercial SD station with a news dept they need to provide as much coverage as possible if no one else is doing it. They have a role of being a KFI and KNX rolled into one.

That's not how the system works. KFI is Primary Entry Point (PEP) station. KFI, KNX and KBIG monitor each other and other message originating sources. The three stations are monitored by other stations in the Los Angeles area. In most levels of alert, the system is not designed to trigger simultaneous messages.
I understand.

some pockets like Riverside, where I lived escaped serious flooding . We even had a flash flood warning but it turned out to be mostly a false alarm

For some reason, I don't believe that. In the last 30 years, KFI has generally done a better news job than KNX and now, with cuts at Audacy, I doubt they have gotten better.
Yeah knx was always the last place I went to for breaking news. Kfi has always done an exceptional job when breaking news hits - better than some tv stations. For what it’s worth, I listened only to 97.1 Klsx during 9/11 attacks

The Saints game took out our newscast yesterday. But, the New Orleans meteorologists even said L.A. gets about 15 inches of rain in a year and they had 5-6 the last few days. I’m surprised the nfl allowed their game with the Chargers to go on. Just scary. Hope everyone is safe.

After so many years, my memory might be fuzzy, but I seem to recall some, if not all the CBS stations in LA simulcast with KNX or KFWB during the early hours of 9/11.

SoFi Stadium is enclosed, but I would have expected the NFL's lawyers to urge a postponement or move of the game out of concern for the fans' safety going to and leaving the game.

Andy my memory is that it was KNX on all the signals, pretty much making it CBS Network wall-to-wall. KFWB broke away when it made sense to start localizing the stories. The music stations were back in format in 24-36 hours, I believe.

In my area of the Palm Springs market, there was no damage and no flooding. And we woke up to a beautiful, clear and sunny day. But in some places nearby in the foothills of San Jacinto mountain the runoff has been significant, with homes in 4' deep water. The main national East-West Interstate, the I-10, has been closed since yesterday evening due to flooding and mud on the road.

The local TV group that has the ABC, CBS, Telemundo and Fox channels had news at all times on one or more channels and had reporters on the street all day and night.

In several areas of the metro 911 is still down as of noon on Monday. Many roads are still filling with water from San Jacinto runoff.

I could’ve sworn Stern and Leykis were on 97.1 that day. I could be wrong. Like y’all 22 years is a little bit ago

We ran some video on the news here about Palm Springs. We saw a video completely in the water. I thought about you Mr. David!

Well, Stern would have been for a while---the planes hit the towers just before and just after 9:00 a.m. Eastern, 6:00 Pacific, and the decision to put KNX on all the frequencies may not have been made for an hour or so. And since Stern was live from New York, they might have decided to stick with him.

Someone recorded his show from the NY station and posted it to YouTube:

Leykis was on. There's audio of that too:

It may be that CBS just simulcasted KNX on its music stations and let KFWB and KLSX do their own coverage.
