Adult Standards KTUC 1400 AM flips to Conservative Talk

Reducing the music license fees (due to music no longer featured...) could mean an *increase* in profitability?

They simply move to a music license to cover bumper music. That's not a huge discount. Anyway, they likely had a fairly low rate since the rates are based on market and revenue.

No tears from me, but count me as someone who enjoyed the music played on KTUC. Although I enjoy listening to a rather wide range of music, the decades, genres, and styles covered by KTUC's playlist rank as my 2nd favorite that I listen to. They covered everything from back then, Big Bands, 50's Hit Parade, early Rock N Roll, Doo Wop, The Rat Pack, girl groups, Motown, 60's pop and folk hits, Great American Songbook, Crooners, and to top it off Soft Oldies from the 70's. Luckily, I have an extensive music collection built up over the years to take it's place. KTUC had a truly a unique and one of a kind playlist. If anyone can direct me to a terrestrial radio or internet stream offering something similar, I would love to know about

The format flip I' know was a necessary business decision. I know that before the pandemic their billing, although never great, was better than what it is now. They were never able to bring revenue back to the level it was before the pandemic. The continuing downturn in advertising revenue affecting the broadcast industry was probably the final straw. I imagine their billing was at an all time low this year. KTUC was basically a computer in a closet attached to a 1kw AM on a lousy frequency, so operating costs were dirt cheap, so they at least were still able to make a tiny amount of profit.

I don't know if the new format will be more profitable, I have my doubts. But it does allow their Westwood One to clear some of the Talk shows in Tucson, They spent a lot money to be able to own WW1.

Finally I don't think Chimp will be too upset. Anytime KTUC was mentioned, almost always it was followed by the complaint of too much repetition, " They play the same songs, over and over"....

I'm not going to be happy if they dropped the big bands on Sunday. Although they did play the same songs over and over.

I finally decided WLML in West Palm Beach and Serenade Radio in England sounded good even if they almost never played a familiar version of any song. There's a lot of good stuff on both stations.

This news leaves me a bit wistful. When I lived in Tucson in the early 2000s, KTUC was one of my work truck presets. It was AM stereo which fit the format pretty well. When I got tired of the sports yak on 1490, KTUC and the Green Valley station were worthwhile alternatives.

Back in the day, 1400, KTUC started out as a music station, then, it changed to "NewsRadio 14, KTUC" (with KFMM, 99.5 FM b'casting in Monaural) with studios & xmtr. located on Cherry Ave. where Cox Cable is. It was here that I met Walt Querry aka Ron Jacobs & from there, he introduced the "radio/xmtr" gods to me & the rest is history. Amazing how things come around again, now 1400 AM is back to the news/talk format. It's a good thing that my former boss Mr. Slone gave me the entire music library from our days at KCEE, 1030AM so, I won't miss 1400's music. So, let's see how this will turn out. :)

Do you know whatever happened to that beautiful vintage jukebox that sat in the KCEE lobby? If you were given that AND the music library, then you really scored! Wasn't Slone's version of KCEE real similar to what KTUC was playing? If so, then WOW! and to have that to listen whenever you want.

Old post, I know...

Didn't a (significant?) portion of that KCEE 1030 AM library come from the 790 AM library of...KCEE?
