92.5 Houston

It seems like the 92.5 translator is broadcasting 92.5 from Abilene KMWX. I hear no trace of ESPN or other Abilene stations.

You beat me to the punch, it is now almost 6:30 AM and it is still broadcasting 92.5 the ranch.

Was that really K223CW or tropo from Abilene? There has been massive tropo across the country this past week

Definitely not tropos. That strong tropos system hasn't made it to Texas. The Abilene area is extremely rare in Houston. Tropos was actually pretty weak last night and nowhere near that direction.

Where I was DXing there's a big building that can help pretty much block tropos from the east or west depending on the side I was on. I did get that 92.5 with max strength on both sides but I didn't get RDS.

I don't get how 92.5 in Houston could be broadcasting the Abilene signal.

What you are being suggested is that reception conditions seen at certain times of the year along the Gulf Coast might allow a signal form Abilene or some other distant market to skip into Houston. Not a rebroadcast... just bouncing off polarized layers in the sky light lights off a mirror.

That's not what happened. It was either that translator or some other signal while the translator was off. The only station I ever really get from there sometimes is KGNZ and I did not hear that or other signals from there. If it was KMWX they had to have been running power like a TV station which seems extremely unlikely. I did also hear KCOL, KKHA, and KWUP with HD and no ESPN

FM skip is often power independent. A DXer in Washington state had an opening to Oklahoma and Kansas, and heard some Translators just as clearly as 100 kw full C's.

I’ve heard a translator from Corpus Christ through tropos and an LPFM from Miami through skip before. I’m just saying it would have had to have a ton of power from Abilene to pick it up max strength in my area and no other Abilene stations

I was DXing last night and monitoring the maps. Texas was pretty much dead, besides common regional enhancement. I highly doubt that 92.5 from Abilene was making it into Houston. I think it’s more likely that one of the people in this thread will win both Powerball and Mega Millions at the same time than 92.5 Abilene having been heard in Houston last night via one of the several DXing modes.

I wouldn't go that far, Chris. KRRV from Alexandria has shown up here on 100.3 recently, burying both semi local KZQX and the ever present Jack-FM that comes in from your neck of the woods. I've also had KEYJ "Rock 108" from Abilene take over 107.9 here in Tyler. Just last week, I had a full stop seek, local grade signal from 93.9 in Corpus, blasting 80s hits in ETX.

It's rare, as you know, but it can happen.

That station is extremely common here. I actually once heard them just north of New Orleans so it definitely gets out with not too many stations nearby on that frequency.

I know recently there have been some nights of strong tropos in my area but Chris was just talking about that night I heard KMWX.

A couple of mornings ago tropos was pretty weak. The strongest was west of Houston like KULM/KUBJ/KTIM which are pretty common. Also had some College Station and Bay City area stations. I did hear weak Beaumont and Alexandria. And the only thing to the north I heard are the common KIVY and KYKS. Definitely nowhere near Abilene. The only station from there that usually makes it out on occasion is KGNZ but I haven't heard them since the end of June.

KOYN up in Paris is the most common on 93.9 here. What I am saying is that I believe Chris is mistaken for doubting that you picked up the actual KMEX OTA, even with a local signal on the same channel. It can happen, without any other Abilene signals reaching you. For example, just this morning KBBT in San Antonio was screaming into ETX, but there was no sign of KJ 97, KISS, Y100, or Mix 94.7.

I've been hearing a lot out of San Antonio up here, and I mean a lot. Everything from KZEP to KROM, KISS To The Eagle. KYKS has been struggling here recently. Same with K-Fox, both of which are regularly listenable here. Lufkin ain't that far from here either. Appearances by Beaumont and Lake Charles have been missing for weeks. I enjoy when the "Big Dog" goes to barking its version of rock music up here. Sure beats our own "safety first" duo of rockers available this way.

My client asked me to ask everyone that if 92.5 was broadcasting 2000 watts as was previously alleged in this forum, how could a station 350 miles away overpower it? K223CW regularly experiences interference from everywhere, especially the LPFM in South Houston. Despite its weak signal, the translator has the advantage of over 1,100 feet of height.
