Steve Harwell, original Smash Mouth lead singer, dies at 56

I remember Smashmouth at their peak in the 2000's. Now their former lead singer is gone.

Here is their most known song that was big at the turn of the 21st century.

Also this one which is a remake.

Here is more. Note their lead singer had health issues when that was reported.

While Smash Mouth reached peak success the late nineties, the group continued performing together and their fans stayed with them.

"We've never sounded better," Harwell said of touring in more recent years. "The shows have been great. Crowd response is fantastic. There's just a great camaraderie in the band now. We're all getting older, and I take more pride in it than I did years ago."

Since Harwell left the band in 2021 over health issues, the group has continued to perform with new lead vocalist Zach Goode.

This is when Smashmouth remove their former lead singer.

The announcement from the 54-year-old singer came after fan video from the weekend show seemed to show Harwell cursing at the audience and threatening them, with a statement from a representative for the San Jose-bred group revealing that Harwell has been dealing with “long-term medical issues” over the past eight years, adding that he suffered “numerous symptoms directly linked with his current medical situation” during last weekend’s gig.

I thought "All Star" was Smash Mouth's peak. But then, I spent far more time in minor league ballparks back in their "heyday" than I did listening to pop radio.
They had a fairly quick peak IMO. They hung around but never were able to keep that success long term.

Another legend goes up to Heaven. May he RIP. Thanks for the great music in the late '90s/early '00s.

Here is an interesting one Smashmouth released a new song in the past month but the video has a different lead singer in that one. This is the first song SmashMouth did without Steve Harwell. Their label and concert promoter put Zach Goode as the new lead singer.

That's setting the bar for "legend" a bit low. Third Eye Blind and Natasha Bedingfield had similar brief career arcs in the '90s/'00s. Do Stephan Jenkins and Bedingfield qualify as legends as well?
Third Eye Blind had a free concert in Iowa City a few years ago at the University of Iowa Student Union that got shut down by the Iowa City fire marshal for being overcrowded, that’s sort of legendary….

"All-Star" has become a stadium song, a piece of pop culture, and a karaoke classic. Why would it continue to air on soft rock/classic hits stations if it wasn't? They may have not been as famous as JImmy Buffett but their music was upbeat and still remembered to this day.

Their cover of "I'm a Believer" was on the Shrek soundtrack. Many who remember their cover, also remember it from Shrek, which became an animated classic.

I Never thought All Star would be used as a cover to mourn Smashmouth's former lead vocals. When It was released it was meant for better times when the band released it in 1999 and the song was a hit even all the way to the 2000's.

Here is one where one did a remix with both Monkees and Smashmouth as a duet.

All Star was their peak on the pop charts for sure, but Walkin' On The Sun was their best song by far. I've heard WJMJ out of Hartford play it twice this year, once back in February and the other time about a week ago.

Their cover of "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" was great, much better than the original version, and I also liked their song "Pacific Coast Party" which not as many people remember.

They were definitely an underrated band with a very unique sound.

There's not much WJMJ won't play, but it's a unique non-comm with a loyal audience that gives generously during fund drives. It was played again this morning, as part of a three-song farewell to this weekend's music deaths:
